Server rates
#1
I've read up on a lot of sites about what the rates are and how to use them. (sv_maxrate, sv_maxupdaterate...)
I have it setup right now, but am wanting to know if anyone can give me some rates, to make sure i did it right!
I am running a 8 player SRCDS CS:S or HL2DM server (either one or the other, never at the same time, using console mode)

Here are my computer specs:

well for one.. i would raise the updaterate a little bit, if you run standard 33 tick, cuz the updaterate should be above that, cuz when its lower it causes choke. but really.. its all trial and error, maybe a lil lower maxrate, but that depends on how it is when the server is full.. i don't know cable usually has weird caps on it, but with only 8 players, it shouldn't matter too much. its all just trial and error though, main ones to worry about are maxupdaterate, and maxrate.

I figured thats what people would say Shy lol

Thanks for giving me a place to start! It'll be hard to find out how it runs when its full. I don't think it has ever been full before Sad

edit - I originally had it at 12 players, but moved down to 8 to help out with the rates, is 8 close to a good amount for me?

that really depends on the internet connection.. i have less off a connection then that.. and i can get 14 players with all pings under 100, untill somone starts downloading... lol. but i have heard that cable connections when you try to utilize the whole connection it caps, and fluctuates, and can cause lag.. this is just what i have heard, may be wrong, i would say just a lot of testing. thats about the best way to see. you should be able to get atleast 10 or 12 slots though, well i don't know about hl2mp, i have heard that uses more bandwidth, but css.. i haven't ran a hl2mp server before, well and actually cared to make it work good.. lol.
