What causes Choke?
#1
Hi there!

I run TF2 servers on a Windows box. I have two servers - one in Dallas, one in Chicago. They have identical specs.

The Dallas server runs great - no issues. The Chicago server has frequent FPS drops and high choke values on every server I run.

Pings to the server, however, and tracerts, show no issues.

Any suggestions?

choke means the client wants to send data but would excess the bandwidth limit as set with the rate command.

it is usually a problem caused by a too small rate setting on the client. the server can force the client into bad settings e.g. using a too small sv_maxrate or a too high sv_mincmdrate and sv_minupdaterate (maybe in combination with a too small sv_minrate).

I'm using the same network settings for both my Dallas & Chicago servers, and yet only one has choke.

Two different server locations. Chances are you need to adjust your client settings.

My... client settings?

So choke that appears for all users is a client-side issue for everyone?

What about the FPS drops? Is that client-side as well?
