[POLL] DEBIAN VS CENTOS for Game Servers
#1
HI!

well, im hosting GameServers currently with Centos 5.5 32bit.
I would like to know what do you think is better: DEBIAN or CENTOS ? and WHY ?

(allways talking about 32bit system)

CPU: Xeon I7 W3520
MEM: 12gb ddr3 1600mhz

Also, dont recommend me 64 bits systems.. I dont know why, but game servers keep crashing and crashing when i use 64 bit systems.

I have had no trouble with either but in my eyes debian based systems are better for Desktop environments and CentOS and the like are better for servers. This is just based on my experiences.

If they are crashing have you verified that your ram is ok? Never had problems on 32bit nor on 64bit.

Regarding to security they are most likely as good as the other.

But Debian atw:
- get used to it since 3.0 rc1 (I tried out that time other distros like suse, mandriva, fedora, centOS, gentoo and choose debian)
- never had any major trouble to get something running
- the package management is easy to handle
- great and large community to help you if you can´t find the solution on your own
- stands for most stable versions
- seems to be more cpu friendly if you run gameservers than CentOS
- CentOS is a copy of redhat. Since when do copys reach its original? So why using a copy if you can have a original.

Mosty all been posted above but I prefer Debian because;

-It's got good application libraries (apptitude etc)
-1000FPS stock kernel (Good for people not comfortable with kernel modifications)
-Not locked down as much as centos
-Fairly basic, and lots of tutorials around and support forums/websites
-Major distribution of Linux, so most things will run on it

I must say now though that I have stopped using CentOS and have swapped to Ubuntu for my servers and desktop.

Well the host company that i work for uses CentOS x64.Back home,on my PC i use Debian x64 for hosting 2 private servers of mine.Both CentOS and Debian uses the same kernel with the same main settings.What i can say is that my home Debian is 10 times better than the company's CentOS,stable FPS,easy to use and super stable.So i would strongly recommand Debian.
By the way,we tried to install Debian over CentOS back at the host company,but we can't because it didn't detect our hard-disk's (SAS controller).Can somebody help?On the main DVD,Debian doesn't have SAS driver included,so it can't detect our HDD's Sad

Oh goody! Another Linux Distro vs Linux Distro topic!

I hope this one gets good.

Linux is Linux. The only differences are the kernel versions. If you put the same debian kernel and glibc on a CentOS system, they will behave the same way and vice versa.

but most distros patch glibc and other system tools (and even use patched compilers to compile them). that can make a difference. of course, if you make them equal there will be no difference. but the normal user cannot easily exchange the glibc...

@Monk:
Thats why I posted because I get used to it at the first place Wink

The biggest differences between distros are the community behind them and their build in packages/packagecontrol.

@saintjimmygd:
try a live cd that works and use debootstrap to install. If you use it, install/build a kernel that supports your hardware before you reboot your system Wink

In my experience, ArchLinux beats the pants off both for running SRCDS. The FPS is the most stable and CPU load the lowest out of anything I've tried. Probably because it's stripped down out of the box and you only load the packages you need. However of the two, I would say Debian is definitely the better pick for similar reasons. It's almost as good as Arch. CentOS doesn't give too good of performance or versatility in SRCDS (locked at 333fps, with relatively higher CPU load)...unless you plan to optimize the kernel specifically for it.

Also, given the correct 32-bit libraries are loaded, there shouldn't be stability issues with 64-bit distros. I use Arch64 for my TF2 servers and haven't had any problems.
