Hey there! Just gave up my world of warcraft addiction and decided to start playing CS:S again . I just reformatted my PC and installed the 64 bit version of Windows XP Pro. CS:S runs great although I can't seem to run a dedicated server . When I run the "source dedicated server", a window pops up titled "Start Dedicated Server". I configure it and hit "Start server".A loading screen pops up saying "loading dedicated server..." and disappears seconds later. Then, nothing. No error, no nothing! *blinks*... I've searched all over the damn internet looking for help but can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
You should use the HLDSUPDATETOOL.
Read about how to install in on our home page
Also, you are MUCH better off installed 64-bit Win7 rather then 64-bit XP.

I know the feeling, last night I was running my server fine, then it told me I needed to update, so I let it auto update, tried to load it, wouldnt work. So I thought Id let CS:S Update and then it might update the appropriate files needed. It updated but Source DS Still wont work loading CS:S.
I have ran Source DS and told it to launch a hl2dm server, this works fine, however when it tries and loads a CS:S server it just says "starting dedicated server..." then just disapears.
p.s. new to this site as never had an issue so far.

Edit
Just looked at where source DS is stored on my machine C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\%steamID%\source dedicated server
and everytime i seemed to have ran it for css it has created a .mdmp file called "srcds_1276_crash_2010_6_24T7_57_41C0.mdmp"

any idea how to view what is wrong?
Ok, so I finally found a decent tutorial on youtube regarding how to use HLDSUPDATETOOL. It took like 30 mins to DL all the files. I restarted my computer and gave it another shot and still NOTHING!
I'm having the EXACT same problem that you just mentioned with it creating a .mdmp file each time it fails to run. No error msg or anything, just a new file created in the same folder you described each time.
PC spec is
Processor - Intel Core2 Duo 6320 OC'd @ 2.4GHz
RAM - 4GB
OS - Win XP Pro 64-bit
Well, after hours and hours of digging for more info, I've come to the conclusion I'm just going to have to wait for more ppl to encounter the same issue and post their results. Sevanon and I got in touch via Ventrilo (very similar to skype) and have spent the past couple hours scratching our heads. The whole server side aspect of the game is brand new to me, but Sevanon on the other hand was running his server just fine apparently up until he DL'd the patch for CSS. Furthermore, he is still able to run his HL2 death match server. It's only CS:S that he is not able to run as a dedicated server since the patch.
Please guys... I know some of you must be experts at this by now. If you don't have a solution to the problem, perhaps you can suggest something, anything...
Thanks so much in advance! I need to get some shut-eye. zzz...
Agreed, me and Aressem have tried all different things, have looked at instructions and forums all over, i even tried going to already online servers but was ignored or just told to go away when asking for help . Oh well hopefully by the end of today more and more people will have the same problem.

You may want to bypass using Steam to setup the server, and get the hldsupdatetool.exe in order to get the latest files for Counter-Strike Source. Then setup a .bat so that you can setup the server with a command line and make sure that doesn't work either. Remember that the exe is in the orangebox folder now.
Hello, I'm completely new to all of this but i am having a problem with this too
A few days ago I installed srcds according to the instructions for Windows 2000. It was working perfectly when I tested it on my LAN
Yesterday when I was going to play with my friend over the internet, i found out that there was an update to CSS and so i tried installing it, it failed so i decided to uninstall it. I tired reinstalling it and it came back saying the hldsupdatetool was already running, I checked the processes tab in task manager and it most certainly was not running so I installed it into another directory. It installed this time.
Then I ran the update and it began downloading the new CSS. I noticed that instead of just downloading it in C:\srcds the new version is trying to download to C:\srcds/orangebox (yes with the reversed slash)
When it fully downloaded, i tried running srcds.exe
it literally did nothing, it opened no window, no error, nothing
Could this backwards slash be why its not working?
I now have tried downloading the entire thing on another pc, and confirmed that the directory typo does exist, it wasn't me mistyping it.
If anyone knows if this could be a problem, or was I doing something wrong (completely possible too )

I already tied this. Unless I'm doing it wrong, it's still not working. Please, more detailed help!
Just an update for anyone who is stuck, using the steam GUI to open source dedicated server will not work. i have tried numerous times and even after the updatetool it still did not work however after following a guide from a steam on how to get things to work and moving files around i managed to get it to work but in a command prompt style window rather than the standard steam interface.

will hopefully post an update on this once i get some form of plugin installed, i previously had mani admin so will try that and let everyone know.
thanks for the help to whom contributed.

Hey would you by any chance remember what you moved around or changed exactly in order to get srcds working again. The only tips I'm seeing is move blah around before you update, well sorry, its a new install, and it won't run with the instructions on this site anymore...
So if you can remember what you did, that would be awesome.
oh btw, the dedicated server tool gui that you try running from inside of Steam won't work like you mentioned before because Valve never updated it for the current release. How's that for customer satisfaction? >_>
ok..here i teach you how to create/run a css server.
1.Download hldsupdatetool.exe .
2.Create a folder on any HDD named "SRCDS".
3.Instal hldsupdatetool.exe in the "srcds" folder.
4.Run hldsupdatetool.exe from the srcds folder.
5.Let hldsupdatetool update.
6.Create a shortcut of the hldsupdatetool after the update.(the 1 from srcds folder)
7.Right-click on the shortcut -->Proprieties and at target type:
dont forge the (.)-- . means the current direcory..dont change it.
8.Click apply then ok.
9.Double-click on the shortcut and let hldsupdatetool.exe download the server files.(30-60min. depends of internet conn.)
10.After the black window closes make a shortcut of "srcds.exe".
11.Right-click on the shortcut-->Proprieties and at target type:
