WHY?

Why Source Dedicated Server is free of charge,so that you can set the slots of this as you wish(depended on bandwitdh, etc) and Ventrilo Server is not free to set the max slots?(free ventrilo server is limited to 8 slots)I think that this is very unfair. Please, leave your opinion here Sad Sad

Don't think it is unfair. True that is is annoying but unfair no.....

It's because Ventrilo can only earn their moneys on selling a licens to their product. The limited version, 8 slots, are probably just there for people to test werether it's worth buying or not. VALVe earns their money on the actual game and therefore they can provide a free SRCDS program to their customers.

Valve wants to make it easy to run servers, and doesn't want to have to deal with licensing. Plus, a lot more people would buy the games over servers. Trust me, I bet they have thought about charging for the servers, but right now they like their little piece of competition compared to the other game companies to require licenses.

Same reason DICE is licensing out BC2 servers rather than providing the software for free...

Same reason why BC2 fails compared to other games with Dedicated Servers if you ask me. Sure it prevents piracy, but keeps the game exclusive to those with money.

Ventrilo licensing will be non existent if people start to use more open source VOIP software such as Mumble, but again people choose what is easy instead of what is better.

Its still going to be around for a while... Mumble looks tacky, and TS3 is too complex.

Ventrilo is simple and sells.
