The server only reads from the hdd if he starts and changes maps. The rest is loaded into the ram. All you can gain is a one or two second faster mapchange. Clients will take more time on their side to load the map than the server needs. That is why investing in expansive hdds is pointless for srcds.

Just go for one that is known for its long lifetime and stability.

i see, thanks for the head up Big Grin

so i can order 500GB black x 2 : Raid 0

+

1 TB for files and backup,, or just i get 1 TB for both system + files?

does it matter if the drive is 7,200 RPM or 10,000 RPM for SRCDS use?
Do u prefer if i save money & upgrade to my RAM from CORSAIR (3 x 2GB) 6GB to 12GB instead of upgrading the HDD

??
will these do fine for now:
core i7 2.80GHz + Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 + CORSAIR 3 x 2GB + 1TB Black WD HDD + bandwidth 2MB upload for 32 players?

I am curious what your upload speed at home is. I am assuming a minimum of 5-6mbit upload right? The specs you gave us are more than ideal for hosting at home, but without a solid upload speed, you might as well spend money to colocate a server.

Eh, you might have some trouble with hosting a good game server on that connection. As I always say home connections are not designed to connect to other home connections. This is why you generally do not want to host a good server from home.

Your upload speed is okay for a basic 12 - 24 slot game server. With a sv_maxrate of 20000

As for hosting on windows 7, make sure you disable useless windows features and strip down the OS quite a bit as you will have minor FPS fluctuations.

As for hard drives, basic 500GB is just fine. I would go for a redundant array over a performance array for game servers, but then again if its just hosting a single game server why bother. Also I have been informed that SSD's don't make good server drives as over constant 24/7 use they wear out a bit. ( Not sure if this is true, I don't use SSD's in servers... )
Looking for a game server? Visit fullfrag.com and pick one up as low as $2.50 / mo!
