Windows Server 2008 and SRCDS Loss
#1
Hi,

I've set up a new box and migrated a bunch of CSS servers to it. No configuration changes other than upgraded hardware and the OS went from Server 2003 to Server 2008. I'm getting LOSS when playing on any of the CSS servers. Pretty much everyone is complaining about loss. Is there something in Server 2008 which could be causing this?

Server specs:
CPU: Quad Core 2.5ghz
RAM: 8gb
OS: Windows Server 2008 Standard X64

Only CSS servers on this box.

You have decent specifications. The main thing here is to make sure all of the servers are not running off one core. I know it sounds easy and lame, but you need to make sure that only 3-4 servers are on one core. I am taking a bunch to be 12 servers. So try to go into the GamePanel or something that controls the game servers, and set the affinity of the servers to only one core. Make sure you keep track so that one core is not overloaded.
If this is not the case, you may want to check your settings to make sure that FPS settings are set correctly in both the command line and server.cfg. I cannot tell you how many times differences between the two will result in an unstable server. People get a 250fps server and try to turn it into a 500 fps servers by changing cvars in the server.cfg, but they can't alter the command line resulting in unstable fps (100fps to 700 fps), cannot stay stable. This may be a factor because HPET will be enabled now, and 500 fps is no longer the set limit. You should be able to do 1000fps which may result in higher variations of the fps if the settings aren't set correctly.

Hi,

I've tried all of the above. It's still happening. Hell, I even changed the OS back to Windows Server 2003 and i'm still getting it. The loss happens only on SRCDS servers on the box.

I hate to sound rude, but what is your upload speed. I saw you didn't post it, is it possible that your upload might be limited?
