Good Enough?

Hey all, me and my friend planning to start a server company.. Where we are selling servers..

We have a HP server with this contain:

Intel Core i5-750 (4 x 2.66 GHz)
6GB DDR3 ECC RAM
1x 500 GB Harddisk with RAID

Redundant 20 Gbit Internet

What we wanna ask is!

Are thats good enough to host 50-100 servers!? Smile

50-100 servers? NO WAY! Maybe 100-150 slots

Well each one of those boxes will run about 4 LARGE servers.
So 100/4 = 25 Physical Server.
If that's 20Gbps, then I think you'll be fine, but you would clearly need MANY IPs...

Please do not PM me for server related help

Good luck justifying that many IP addresses to ARIN as a private individual.

But uh, with all due respect, you don't seem to have a very realistic grasp of what's needed to run a game server.

Maybe, that are why i'm asking! Smile

If you want to run a "farm" of several gameservers, consider looking up the concept of "Virtual Private Hosts" as that will help you better manage the user resources. That said the numbers people here will give you are for servers that see a lot of use, and quite frankly many servers people pay for ... don't really see a lot of use Toungue So you also have to account for that.

If you want to run a LOT of gameservers then it can be more economical and easier to control to work out a lease deal with a datacenter that allows you to get servers from them on a "per needed" basis, ie, when you sell one to a customer, than it is to try to build and maintain some uber-computer that can handle 100 gameservers because we're pushing into supercomputer territory there if we're handling new games.

As a rule of thumb I assume 1-6 servers per processor or "core" on the machine, it really depends on a lot of variables. Original Half-Life for example is much less demanding than Left For Dead 2 for example and you could probably push a top-of-the-line computer to that upper limit of six, whilst for the newer games you'll be lucky to get more than one going per core.

The 'problem' if you can call it that is when the server starts, restarts, and loads maps, it will spike the CPU usage of that core, so for newer games that really need the faster processor, this means that every time one server restarts or switches maps, ALL the servers on that core are going to lag.

We only sell Counter-Strike games.. Right now.. So, how many counter strike source 12 slots server do you think we can host on this server? Smile

4-8 to maybe 10 - 1-2 for each processor with some 'give' if you really super-optimize everything - and also depending upon how many bots and other addons you run.

But don't take that as gospel, run some decent stress tests with your setups and various amounts of servers and stick with the most stable balance of quantity and quality. There's no estimation that can replace good, solid benchmarking.
