How many instances of a 100 tickrate CS:S server (Let's go with 24 slots each) could I run on the following hardware:
Dual Xeon Quad Core 2.13Ghz
6GB Tri-Channel DDR3
Running a CentOS Linux Distribution. Thanks for the help!

My guess would be one pr core.
But it depends on how much bw you got.

it depends of the using maps and plugins of each server. if your are preparing one server with big maps and a lot of plugins the server will increase the CPU up (of one) to 99% load. Which version number is the cpu? you wrote ddr3 that could be a never one like I5 or I7 ? or its really an old Xeon? its important, because the older ones have less power then the never one.

with the proper optimizations (kernel...) like 6. (I guess this is a recent Xeon, as it's quad core and has DDR3...). But peter_pan is right, plugins etc. play a big role and it is very hard to tell in advance how the performance will be (also chipset etc. plays a big role). you will have to try it out...

24slot default 256fps (fps_max 300) 100tick should be no problem per core... SO I guess 8x 24 slot CS:S servers.

BehaartesEtwas is right also, i love this kind of questions "how many gs could i run?" > because noone can give a right answer, only a short way to the right! no system is the same as each other, one system could be a I7 the other too but the chipset and HDD and so on could be different. Normally you need to find out for every system its own optimization and its amount of gs and its slots. Have fun! :-D

It's a Nehalem CPU. The general idea seems to be 1 per core for a total of 8. Interesting. Any idea how game server companies can afford to do this?

Because half of the game servers we sell remain empty...

No more than 12 servers or you will put to much stress on the CPU.

You can go higher however the servers clients will experience bad rego, lag spikes every now and then etc. You will find allot of GSP's (Game Server Providers) cram allot of servers on there box these days.
