Always have facts with you:

But you are right.

meaning the i5 that has a smaller number than 750... they have only 2 cores but higher clock speeds. if (and only if) the core architecture is the same those will be better in single core performance - which is required for hosting one server with many slots...

Thanks for the responses, I now ask for a public server .. not profiting worth investing a significant amount to change the entire platform I5-I7, or exchange porcesorul soket 775 Core2Duo 8600?
Performance would be really great for a server css to justify the investment?
If a 2.13 Ghz Core2Duo 6420 acceptable to go 36 users Core2Duo 8600 3.3 GHz, 2MB cache and I say that extra 1Ghz will take 36 to 40 decent players tickrate 66
Thank you again!

did you try an fps meter measurement? there you can easily see at which number of players the fps start to drop, meaning your cpu is too slow for that many players. if fps are always unstable, it's probably not the cpu.

We made measurements and go pathetic. Do not know that is because I rebuilt the server from 0 and have the same problem I had debian installed with 1000 fps and fall on your head.
CentOS is 500 fps max and decreases as the graphics or CPU time is not know what to say to go wrong.

that doesn't look like a too slow cpu, simply because the cpu should easily handle 15~20 players (I assume there is *no* other server running on the root? and you no longer have that P4 running but some socket 775 based cpu? which one exactly?).

centos is not limited to 500fps, only it's default kernel might have that limit. nevertheless I recommend debian over centos.
try the howto in my wiki, maybe that helps for a start. if you got that running and stable at 1000 fps (try that first!) for a low to medium number of players (at least 20 or below), you can start with further optimizations regarding a higher number of players (e.g. dropping fps and tickrate and/or changing kernel settings like preemption).

I do upgrade to Core2Duo 8600, I have one question: if you have bad HDD, bad influences or fps server sites, I say this because some time ago, because UPS malfunction was electric shocks and had some problems with server startup with error that does not see HDD.
I know that has major influence in the functioning of the server capacity HDD normal, except when changing maps much smaller.
Thanks!

where is the question?

The problem is that few FPS and I want to know if a HDD with possible bad can cause these problems in the functioning server? to reduce the number of frames

the HDD has no influence on the FPS.

If the hard drive was damaged in some way it could very well cause FPS drops.

at least not directly... If the server would read data from HDD during the running game (i.e. not during map change), it would cause an fps drop in any case. srcds/hlds is not multi-threaded and a read operation from HDD takes much more than 1ms, but the frame has to last less than 1ms.

probably other effects will be much bigger if the HDD is broken (crashes, lockups during boot, application startup or map change, ......). also fsck can detect bad blocks so it's quite easy to find this kind of problem.

I installed 2 operating systems linux debian and centos.
same problem, horrible fps drops!
I changed the HDD and RAM, I tested with Intel P4 HT 3GHz with Intel Core2Duo 6420
so does!
likely to break it or do I leave the server!
It was possible to appear before a server i7 to keep 64 players, the processors are used?
Is now a Core2Duo 8600 processor can not keep a server 36-40 players? is really weak compared to Xeon?
Thanks!

I'm not going to repeat all I wrote... hosting servers with a high number of active slots is not easy. You will have to make some trade-off regarding the server quality. I have not yet seen a server with more than 30 (active) slots that runs as smooth as good war servers. you will also need to do the right optimizations of the system.

(btw: xeons are not faster than the desktop-variants, they "only" have server-related features that are usually not required/used in our cases. also 775-based xeons are only re-labled core2 cpus, more or less)

Ok I understand!
Thank you all, we managed to draw many conclusions, we come back after installing the new processor and server recovery.
thank those who have been patient with me, and managed to understand my English.
Thank you very much!
