A couple Questions About linux Server
#1
Sorry if this are repeat questions. I have searched and really couldn't find my answer. I have followed the How-To Steps for creating a Linux server. Worked great.

Linux Distro if wondering is Ubuntu 32bit server.

Once you start the server, How do you stop it? Also, how do you edit the server.cfg or in fact create one?

Also, FTP Server, How do you get one for it? I followed the guide for vsftpd but there really isn't any guides on creating user account. it says edit the vsftpd.conf, but how do you do that?

Again, if these questions are repetitive, I do apologize.

Stop the server by killing the PID.
Here's a topic:

For FTP I suggest sftp:

Take a look at the apt-get command for packages you want to install.

Commands on prompt on course ...

Good deal. I have been searching the net most of the day. This is all new to me. The ftp part is so damn confusing.

Is the server edition to advanced for a beginner? Would it be easier for me to use a GUI version instead of a command line?

Once you have sftp running there's nothing more to it. Just ftp-get a client like filezilla ( http://filezilla-project.org/ ) and upload all you want.

Configuring and hosting a linux server as a starter means a lot of reading ...

killerbutler use a DESKTOP version of linux. If you are hosting a game-server you don't have to install a SERVER version of linux. In fact,DESKTOP editions of linux are much better in game-hosting then SERVER edition.Use Debian 5.04 or Ubuntu-Desktop (you get direct 1000 fps).

I went ahead and added the gnome for the server edition but I must have messed something up.

Is there a gnome or whatever you call it installable program for ftp server. the command line crap is impossible. I tried a few free bees and no luck. I even used the free installer that is included with ubuntu

killerbutler,

I am confused about your needs Toungue, so let me ask a few questions:

1)
You need help on just setting up SRCDS, or on setting up a Linux server as well?

2)
Is it a local box, or a remote box?

3)
Is your box for hosting SRCDS only?

Thanks.

Are you referring to your GNOME installation, or something else?

For FTP server, I use vsftpd, which I just:

- install it, by aptitude install vsftpd
- config the /etc/vsftpd.conf, for me, just anonymous_enable, from yes to no // No fancy setup for me Cool

For FTP client, if 9.10 or above (forgot about 9.04), just use filezilla, which should be available in the default repo. Just:

- aptitude install filezilla

That's why I would like to know whether you are setting up a local box, or a remote box.
A less annoying signature... (link)

Sorry for the delay.

No I have the server installed and running. Runs rather well.

Its a Local box sitting in a closet with a Network line and a power cable. (Once Configured)

For the time being it will host only a CSS War-Craft server. Once I am better with linux and the little nuggets of info that go with it, I will move to bigger and better things.

Yes I used the Gnome installer and it ever well. i just went ahead and install the 32bit workstation version. and it went flawless.

I tried the vsftpd server and was able to get it set up, but when I try to connect to it with Filezilla on Windows box, it tells me my password is incorrect.
Okay server is running, I can connect to the ftp server. So far not to shabby for a noob. Now if I can just get the remote access figured out, I will be good to go.
