Really because i don't understand people that are hosting servers on such old hardware. Its using more power, less performance and could stop working every second. Couldn't you explain that to me?

Yes, my 2 cents on that:
It is not intended to be used as an "always available" and "always up" game server. This is just old hardware I got as a present because it was replaced by a newer gamer PC. However an Athlon XP 3000+ is very much capable as working as a file server, TV-streaming server (PAL), and gaming server for many actual games. And that for "free". And you know, you can do so much more funny stuff on your own game server; but know it just stopped working, because of some "strange" reason and Valve even doesn't care to tell their customers.

So, if you would like to offer me SSE2 capable hardware for free, thanks, please mail it to my german address.
Otherwise just be quite, unless you have some productive to the described problem to tell.

I see.. but if you had it running many hours each day, a new less power-consumption processor would pay itself. But i have an idea for your problem, why don't you try to update the chipset?

Agreed, Lol554 please drop it... He doesn't want to bother with a new computer, or doesn't have the money for it. Let him do what he wants to do and stop giving reasons...
Looking for a game server? Visit fullfrag.com and pick one up as low as $2.50 / mo!

Well I finally gave in & opened a Windows l4d2 server on a machine running an even less powerful Athlon XP processor with less memory. I don't think Valve is ever going to help Linux users with older equipment. Either there are too few of us or many stayed silent.

WTF is doing Valve ??!!

This is a few months I haven't used my L4D2 server on my Ubuntu Athlon XP 3000+ server, and I saw that illegal instruction ?!!
Why not, it can be an error caused by me... BUT NOT, IT'S VALVE ?! WTF !

I've a too much old CPU ?!! It was working fine with 8 people on coop mode, zombies were boosted to eat you like lions, game stats always online and up-to-date, players stats with databases... and that during few months! and few years on HL2DM (ok, without bots... :p)
And after that, I'm reading a poor bad hardware to run L4D2 dedicated server ?!

Do "home customers" who want to set up a friendly dedicated server, to play with friends on LAN on internet, have to buy a x4 Xeon with 8Gio RAM, Raid 5 SCSI ???

@lol554 : I think destroying & recycle old hardware + building/buying a new one, is just worse than using a useful (old) hardware until it die... It's just my ecological (and economical) point of view. And why may you buying the newer video card, and overclock this one + CPU (like a lot of little geeks), it's just a big % more consumption for a little FPS... sry, I think this subject is closed... so if you are lucky to buy a dedicated server every 2 (or 1, lol) years, it's cool for you ! :p

This is only a Linux (and VALVE !) problem ?? Working fine on a Windows ??
WTF !

I noticed there was a L4D2 update this morning. But did it fix this? Nope. *sigh*

Abandon all hope! Sad

I think Valve is never gonna fix that again. They just decided to make SSE2 mandatory, and that's it; Basta!
Try asking the support about the issue, you will most probably never get an answer... Sad

Just realized today after trying to boot up my scrim server that this was going on.. Epic fail on valves part. I want my server back, and I don't want to transfer for to Windows to have it. I will be in contact with Valves Linux support now as well.. Maybe the more they get hassled the better chance we have at a fix.

-OK
-O.K.
