How many servers can these systems run?
#1
I currently have 2 systems on sight:
System: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
Processor: Dual Intel Xeon 3.06Ghz
Ram: 4GB RAM

And the other one:
System: Linux
Processor: Celeron 2400
Ram: 512 Big Grin

Games: L4D and L4D2.
Admin mods: Sourcemod with some few plugins that does not affect the performance.

So the question is, how many L4D(2) servers can run on these configurations without any lags or performance issues?
I have plans about boosting the fps on all servers, and set the tickrate to 66.

What type of Xeon Processor is that? If it is the HT Single Core then you should be good with 2 - 4 servers per processor.

For the Celeron, I would say maybe 1 l4d server...

Xeon 3.06 GHz, it is the W3550:

Be sure you got HPET enabled in the BIOS. As for HT, it is mainly for multi-threaded programs. If you are mainly using this box for SRCDS, I would suggest turning it off, because it can cause timing issue to SRCDS.

And which Windows are you using? Since you are using this box as a server, probably either 2003 or 2008, but 2003 doesn't support HPET.

Windows 2008 Enterprise? Good for you. Smile
(For a dedi SRCDS box, Standard is enough though...)

Be sure to set it as "Application Server".

A friend of mine got a free license because of his job, but he isn't using it.

(For the Xeon 3.06Ghz)

Sorry for didn't come back to this thread sooner.

I have only hosted L4D for a short time, but in general, as L4D/L4D2 are both using Source engine, you should be able to start with 32 slots per each core.

(While both L4D & L4D2 use Source engine, L4D2 uses more system resources for the AI and etc.)

You have to do your mix & match. For example, something like:

(L4D/L4D2, campaign = 4 slots, versus = 8)

- Core 1: 4 + 4 + 8 + 8 + 8
- Core 2: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
- Core 3: 8 + 8 + 8 + 8

On my Windows SRCDS box, I don't use core 0, but If you don't run anything else but SRCDS, you might want to use core 0 to host a few more servers as well.

Once you got that initial setup, pay attention to your system resource usage, and you should have an idea how much more that you can squeeze in.

Also, regarding the uplink, 64 players will need about 10 Mbps (confirmed with my own usage), so for 64+ players, you have to get a 100 Mbps.

So i can run 4 L4D2 Versus servers per core. Wow.

What about a machine like C2D T5800 2,0 Ghz with 2 gb ram?

You would be able to run about 3 servers on each core on that machine. Just notice that L4D2 servers are very happy to use 250mb of ram (and more if needed)

Processor: AMD Opteron Dual Core 2.0GHz
RAM: 2GB
What about this?

I have found this dedicated server and want to know how many servers could run on it. I am looking for some cheap dedicated servers to test on.

I use my experience from my earlier servers. I had 6 servers running at a 3,1 GHz Dual core. Tjat used about 50% on both cores. I would say that they will use 500 mhz as max. But thats just my opinion. It will only go that far if theres a horde on all 6 servers. Try make the servers, and analyse the results you get from the CPU monitor.
