Achieving 1000 FPS

I have read many topics here and I see a lot of different solutions to achieve 1000fps but it seems to be different for the type of server you have.

So basically here are my specs.

Kentsfield 2.4 Quad
8 GB ram
and plan to be using Debian 5 (Lenny)

So basically what should i do to achieve the 1000 fps. Is there a specific kernel that is best. Are there settings on the box itself that should be adjusted turned off or on? Thank in advance.

I've reached 1000 FPS with the default Debian 5.0.1 kernel (2.6.26-2-amd64) on a 64 bit system. I've got Hetzner's EQ4 [ http://www.hetzner.de/de/hosting/produkte_rootserver/eq4/ ] and there are no configurations to the kernel and no special libraries.

So, all you need to do is not follow BehaartesEtwas' instructions

Hehe, realistically BehaartesEtwas' instructions make the kernel more pre-emptive (real-time) and thus the kernel can guarantee better response times for the game server.

It's your call whether you want to waste CPU for negligible FPS stability or do you suffice for normal 1000 FPS. Obviously if you don't get 1000 FPS out-of-the-box, then you should follow BehaartesEtwas' instructions.

yep, having used this HOWTO I got the following result for our public server: http://fpsmeter.org/p,view;38814.html (at those 2 downpeaks mapchanges occured)

What's your problem? My reply was conformed to the simplicity of ulx's post: "All you need to do is ...". In the next sentence I recommend following your instructions if the out-of-the-box solution doesn't work out.

To make it clear for everybody: I've got 1000 FPS server with default Debian 5.0.1 on a 64 bit system. Proof: http://www.fpsmeter.org/p,view;29521.html

Everybody can decide whether they want to install Debian 5 and have 1000 FPS or start with another Linux distribution where I don't know if they can reach 1000 FPS out-of-the-box and start following BehaartesEtwas' wiki instructions. If I were to install a new system, I'd set up Debian 5 and then see if it's 1000 FPS or not. If it's not, then I'd follow BehaartesEtwas' instructions.

Everybody should stick to the topic and not try to confuse everybody that BehaartesEtwas' instrcutions are the only way to 1000 FPS.

I never said that. But my howto leads much more often to success than sticking with some default debian kernel.

and still: your server does not hold the 1000 fps stable even without srctv. only because you show your lucky 5 minutes of your server over and over again it doesn't get true

I recommend everyone to try different things. Usually people ask because their unmodified system does not work good enough. So it's pretty pointless to recommend them not modifying their system, right?

and btw: if you say, "all you need to do is not follow" s.o. instructions, it means you think the instructions are wrong. so please stop working against me. I don't have any other interest than helping others.

BehaartesEtwas tutorial helped me out a lot, and I know your way is not the only way to get 1000fps, but it is when you don't know what you are doing with linux.

As I have mentioned before, I have had good luck with the new 2.6.32.3 kernel. Throw in some of the settings from hrg's tutorial and you should be good to go.
