L4D servers hosted on Dedicated server some times get laggy.

Hi!

Well, i have a dedicated server (e5200 + 2gb ram with 10mb connection).
I have 3 L4D servers in this dedicated server. 1 L4D1 10vs10 server, 1 L4D1 12Coop server and 1 L4D2 8vs8 server.

And the problem is that sometimes when the cpu gets at 85% or more of LOAD, the servers get some laggy.
The servers are all at stock rates, but i think that there must be some rates or something to avoid this lag.

And something very interesting is that the L4D2 server is by far the on that has the average best ping. Its very strange that this server get laggy, but with the L4D1 servers the lag is common.

I know that some of you will say: "get a better dedicated host PC", but i think that with better rates its possible to keep this machin and remove thi lag, because its NOT a constant lag, it appears en some critical situations, like when the tank appears or the horde comes.

So, could you help me? SmileBig Grin

With an E5200 :S I wouldn't advise running more than 2 servers on that processor... Even with rates a factor.

It just doesn't have the processing power to keep up with full game servers especially l4d and l4d2.

well, i have to say that its very solid in fact. its laggy only in "critical" moments, like when the tank appears, or when the horde comes.
and appart from that, the L4D2 servers is extremely solid it has really good pings, almost never has lag. But the problem is with the l4d1 servers, they get laggy in critical moments, so i thought that with some lighter rates it could be solved.

Those moments are where the server is using the most processing power...
Your processor might just be too slow to run l4d servers...

I never run game servers on lower end dual cores anyway, but that's what I think is going on.

Hello again !

well, i have decided to close one of the servers (the coop 12 one, that was the most boring and the most resources consumer as well), AND, now, the 2 servers are running very well!

But now i have a question:

as there are only 2 servers running, if i set for the SRCDS.exe procceses Cpu Affinity 1 for one server and CPU affinity 2 for the second, will i have an improvement?

AND, now, with my servers FULL the CPU consuption % doesnt exceed the 75% with 60% of average.... so, im able to run another game server? i mean, not an L4D Server, but what about an Halo 1 server, or a Counter Strike 1.6 (with zombie plague mod maybe) ? or it will be a suicide? because im paying a lot of money for this Dedicated PC and i want to take a real bennefit from this.

Eh, I wouldn't put anymore servers on that box, you might be able to run a 1.6 server or a halo server just fine, but they will be competing with one of the l4d servers for CPU... The reason why only the l4d servers lagged and the l4d2 servers didn't is because they were both on the same core, and the l4d2 server wasn't. Running 1 instance of srcds.exe per core will work fine for you, I wouldn't add anymore with your configuration.
