How many servers?
#1
Question
Hello im about to start renting a dedicated server with all the full access and unlimited bandwitdh, but my main question is how many counter-strike:source servers would i be able to run on this:
CPU: Core™2Quad 4x2,4 GHz
RAM: 4GB
OS Linux: Debian, SuSE, Fedora, CentOS, FreeBsd

Im new with Linux and all but I read alot about its the best way to go since it doesnt use resources as much as windows server 2003/2008

I know how to manage servers but im a noob at knowing what source games really requires to run smoothly.
If i forgot something please forgive me i've been up all night and its 8:00am here

Thanks for taking your time

Depending on the slotcount not more than 2gs per core if you choose 12slots @ tick 100.
If you ar running 20+ slots 1per core.

With a 100Mbit line, I'd say 30-40 100tick slots per core before stability becomes a issue

so 4 x 32slots 66tick + 1x 50slots 66tick shouldnt be a problem?
or 4 x 32slots 100tick + 1 x 50slots 66ticks?

I feel kind of dumb cause ive been hosting servers 5-7years Toungue but renting dedicated servers with linux is really new to me xD

any ways I appriecate you guys taking time to reply for my stupidity Big Grin

there are no stupid questions, only stupid people - Mr. Garrison from southpark

Hmm, I'd say it would be close, if you assigned each of the 4 32slot's to one core, and let the scheduler assign the 50slot to the lowest loaded core, it might work...

what are you talking about? 100mbit line? thats bullshit .... no one can reach with 1-2gs each cpu with this system 100mbit....that means 12,5mbyte/sec. please calculate before you give information like that....on player needs arround 20-25kbyte/sec take the highest....you need for 12,5mbyte/sec arround 500 active players to fill the line/connection for overloading.... and i think you wont host 8 gs with arround 64slots each. please give not information like this ..... think about it before writing....

What the royal fuck are you smoking.

4*32 slots = 128 slots,
128players * 25KB/sec = 3200KB/sec
10240 - 3200 = allot.

And for "no one can reach with 1-2gs each cpu with this system 100mbit

It's one game server per core, 100mbit connection for colocated servers.

"With a 100Mbit line, I'd say 30-40 100tick slots per core before stability becomes a issue" > this post is confusing....i wanted to tell the guys that the 100mbit has nothing to do with stable fps or anything else, they should forget it....

and i dont know where the different is between your post an mine....

"4*32 slots = 128 slots,
128players * 25KB/sec = 3200KB/sec
10240 - 3200 = allot."

i calculated > directly the same .... you got 3,2mb per sec ..... i calculated the max for 100mbit thats are 512 slots/activ players...12,5mb per sec. there is also no differenz if you have 100million cores or one core...if the NK does only have 100mbit its full after 512 players with 25kb/sec each.

loopyman: i dont flame, i want to stop confusing and mixing many things together.

Either learn too English, or don't post.

Quote:With a 100Mbit line, I'd say 30-40 100tick slots per core before stability becomes a issue

Meaning: 30-40 slots per CPU core, as long as the server has a 100mbit connection to handle the bandwidth used by the players.

What? Your confusing me with terrible English.

Thanks for all your answers but you're kind of confusing me Big Grin I was kind of more interested in how many servers the computer would be able to handle. the dedicated server is in a datacenter so dont think the connection wont be any problem Big Grin so if I understood correctly the server should be able to handle atleast four 66/100tick 50 slot servers without any problem if i assign gameserver to own core. Am I right?

Yeah it should do 32 slots per core @ 100tick, or 50 slots per core @ 66 tick, maybe more, but that's my opinion.

Please, before you correct me look for your own mistakes.

[KmZ]KaMiKaZe: the problem is, you cant get a real slot count for each cpu. it depents of the count of plugins on each gameserver, the netsettings of each gamer, the fps of the gameserver e.g. you can run one 500fps gameserver with less plugins and 24slots with a low load but you can also host 24slots with 1000fps, a lot of plugins and you will receive 2-3 more load. i can tell you > have a try and test it and check what your system can have for a max load.
