Depends, if its windows, I use server 2003 or XP Pro as they both use less RAM.

Server 2003 is good if you're going to do websites and other things ( gamepanels )
XP Pro is nice because its cheaper, and can run game servers just fine.
Server 2008 is nice because it has a lot more features, but it uses more RAM...

Over all I stay with Server 2003, or XP Pro for game servers.

Oh, on the side note, running servers on windows xp is illegal, and if caught you could get fined, but thats highly unlikely, but possible. Also, 2008 dosent use that much ram, which is why it is SERVER2008, server editions do not use much resources.

Server 2008 does use more RAM that server 2003, and the benefits from it for gameservers are low, except for 1000fps support.

And for the XP Pro thing illegal to use as a server, It wouldent matter for a home game server, you're just running an exe, you're not using it as a cooperate AD server or a central IIS unit or somthing... Since srcds is UDP based the 40 TCP connection lmit doesn't matter.

Just use XP Pro for a home game server... I use Server editions on our production servers, but XP Pro works fine.

Server 2008 uses 800MB->1.2GB idle, nice idea of not using much recourses.

Also, were is a linux in this thread? Debian/Ubuntu/insert linux distro here will run your servers at 1000fps (with some tweaking), with less overheads from the OS, and its free.

Heh, you can even install a VPN and get a remote desktop if your not too keen on going command line.

What the hell! Where do you get that number about Server 2008???

That is quite insane?

What have you done to your server if it use that much?

First of, take a look on the recruitments.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/system-requirements.aspx

Second i run sere-veal servers with Windows 2008, both private and home.
A fresh install of Win Server 2008 without roles, use just around 150-250.
Depending on how long it have been ideal.

From experience with a home server, Seerv08 Enterprise, FTP server, media sharing blah, idled at around 800mb, until it got debian'd

Home Server is full with shit, it is only made for running it self and not alot of other apps.

Server 2008 Enterprise does not use that much memory, unless you installed some shit on it.

Media Sharing = Role (Application you have chosen to install)
FTP Server = Role (Application you have chosen to install)

A little note to this, i had a Linux server that was ideal on around 2gb-3gb memory. But do you know why, because i install stuff on it!
