FreeBSD 4.x vs. 5.x
#1
I'm going to be getting a server in the new year for cs:s running FreeBSD. I used to host a few servers running the old cs pre and post steam.

Anyone care to comment on using the 4.x line vs the 5.x line for srcds hosting?

Or even your experience using one or the other. I used to use the 4.x line for the old cs and was fairly happy with it. Linux for a host os is not an option in my case, so looking for feedback from those using 4.x or 5.x.

5.x

4.x has issues with running the new srcds i hear. there may be workarounds but i am not sure.

i would go with 5.x all day long. although if it is strictly for a cs:source server, go with a Windows 2003 server. srcds runs better on windows unfortunately Sad

a non-*nix os is not an option due to security. Performance can take a back seat somewhat, as I wouldn't sleep at night.

My server ended up being FreeBSD 4.10. To get it to work I needed into NOT install the default linux emulation package (base-6) but linux-base-8 out of the ports tree.

After that, it all worked fairly well.

specs so far:
P4-2.8
512MB ram

16 player runs around 30-34% cpu when full.

I have basically the same specs as you, but i have 2 CS:S servers, 1 20 slot, 1 16 slot, and 1 hlds 20 slot and they're normally full and i don't even think they hit near 50% usage.

I should add that I have tweaked the HZ setting and a few other items to provide better performance at the cost of resource usuage. If I changed that back then my cpu numbers look closer to yours.

I only plan to run 2 servers on this machine, and for the same clan at that. If I where a game host it would be a slightly different story.
