well Im still no further resolving it but it doesnt seem to effect the servers, however the last few days weve been getting

rejectconnection: 188.40.40.201@33412 - this server is using a newer protocol <1014> than your client <7>

popping up in the console of all 3 servers :S

either you got some one trying to join your server with a hacked version, or you need to update your server :=)

Client needs to update, or like Nisd said, you are running a non-updateable cracked version.

True, pengy is right, i diden notice that is said client version was 7 and server 1014....

It means that some one is trying to join with a old version of l4d, and that can only happen for a none-steam.

Well after a night of fannying about its sort of resolved,

the problem I was having with the hldsupdatetool.exe (see above) but basically, when run it re downloaded the whole thing again into a new sub folder within the original install folder rather than update the original.

I had to create 3 new folders on the HDD, copy the hldsupdatetool.exe into each and run it to dl the files it needed, I then made a .bat file that reads

Quote:start hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "left4dead" -dir .

I then set about re downloading the game again for each server (3 in total) and then copied over the cfg files and addons that were running on each server before finally resolving the autostartup gibber and deleting the 3 previous installs.
It does now at least appear to be uptodate and no longer re downloads the files again.

for the record, its definitely not a hacked server that is running, nor will it ever be.

Im assuming the original error occured because your running a serverside plugin that adds custom content to the download tables. The string tables dictionary for downloadables is basically a long string telling the server what custom files the user should download when they connect. Since Left4Dead does not have custom downloads completely coded in (last I checked anyways) this is probably a problem with that.

possibly, the servers are set up using the same cfg and addon files now and its behaving itself from an update pov.

it is still throwing the rejectconnection: 188.40.40.201@33412 - this server is using a newer protocol <1014> than your client <7> up every now and then, its always the same IP address and it seems to be a css master server, its definitely not a client trying to connect to the server.

oh well

It is a custom master list...... people with hacked steam probably use it.
