i have a computer with:
Quadcore i7 nehalem xeon processor 2.6ghz
8gb ram
512mb radeon 4870 graphics card
windows XP
and comcast internet, i went to some speed testing website and i was clocked at 12mb/s down and 6mb/s up.

can i run a 100 tic (preferable, but anything would do) just high rate game server, probably running DM and mani admin, maybe zombie mod?

oh i guess i didnt mention i want to run a Counter-Strike: Source server.

ive only rented servers from gameservers.com before, so i have no idea what you need to run from home.

also, can i play from the same computer im hosting from?

Sadly, you will not be able to run that with comcast.

http://www.comcast.net/terms/network/amendment/

Quote:We've listened to feedback from our customers who asked that we provide a specific threshold for data usage and this would help them understand the amount of usage that would qualify as excessive. Today, we're announcing that beginning on October 1, 2008, we will amend our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) available at http://www.comcast.net/terms/use/ and establish a specific monthly data usage threshold of 250 GB/month per account for all residential customers.

You will hit that cap in a very short period of time, and since its not a hardlimit you will probably be kicked off comcast in a month or two easily. (You get one "warning" and then your forced to leave comcast for a year).

Thats why I went verizon FIOS. No monthly bandwidth cap.

Hmmm, last month i got 300gb without a mail of death from comcast. Also most speedtests don't register comcast's true speed. Since they use "Powerboost" for the first 30 seconds of the download and upload, speedtests get faked by the "extra speed" default plans on comcast offer 6mbps down and 768kbps up

Edit:

I love dd-wrt... I hate comcast...

It's possible they only monitor upload, or your just getting lucky and they don't care about it as much in your area.

More obvious reason would be they are only monitoring the bandwidth in specific areas - the choke points of the network. I don't know.

Feel good you have comcast. I love verizon FIOS, but I hate that you have to use their router to use their TV. Well, that and they didn't install Ethernet after I requested it - but the ONT installer was a contractor and not a normal employee.

Basically, for custom router like PFSense I would have to use my router as a bridge.

Either way, its still a risk you will take if you decide to host. Good luck!.

It's up and down. Also, last time I read that, it said they MAY send a letter... not WILL.

You don't have to use their router for the tv, just bridge a connection from your pfsense router to your actiontec/westell. (call them to enable cat6 on your ont box).
I live in a somewhat rural area so, maybe its not a choke point as darksoul says, It depends on where you live.

Ironically it's normally ME who doesn't read very well... I am known to randomly interject pointless things (like I'm sure I already did in this thread).

now quite honestly, i hate comcast, but i do download some things realalistically at like 1.5mbps which is almost double what i get on dsl. i dont want AT&T, but i havnt heard anything about version having internet before other than those like wireless things in the car.

can someone direct me to where i might consider switching to verison? i have tv and internet with comcast, i use my own wireless router i think someone mentioned that. but a comcast modem. idk. but anyways im on a 6 month contract which expires in a month or two in which case my price on everything with comcast doubles. so that would be a good time to switch. more information on verizon FIOS would be nice. THANKS!

oh well it says verizon FIOS is not availalble in my area. which is pretty strange since i live across the bridge from san francisco, a major city.

Comcast offers another 2 year contract to keep the prices 1 month before the other contract ends.
