Linux to windows. 100% ping difference.
#1
I just switched to windows server 2003, because the steam update screwed up linux.

However, people that once had a 5 ping now have a 15, or even 25 ping. Why is this?. Is there anything I can do to bring the ping down to what it was?.

I know its likely windows having more protection since its designed for that purpose (the server edition) but still, thats a MASSIVE ping difference.

Thank you!.

People here arent that fast :p
please be a little more patient with the reply's

Though the ping difference is around 10 to 15 i'm noticing that me myself i have 40 ping on my own server, though my neighbour with the same provider has 7 ping...

Ping's are very reliant on certain settings in the server aswell with the player itself make sure everyone just has there rates ok, and dont look at the pings.

with nice rates, everyone will simply be able to play within a ping limit of 80 max Wink

Cheerio,

Windows uses more bandwidth that Linux, as the OS.

how many fps does your server reach? low fps might add some ping (more or less constantly for all players), but maybe not so much... If your server runs at the Windows-ish 64 fps (without some pingbooster you can't get past this limit), this will add ~8ms to all pings.

Where did you heart that myth? Linux was "born" as a server OS Toungue, and if you know a little what you are doing, you can make a Linux system practically perfectly secure...

Yes but windows has a entire GUI along with a bunch of other bloat. You can have linux with command line and the bare essentials. I was just saying they made windows server 2003 more secure then say windows xp. And some of the default security crap might be causing this.

As for server FPS, I have pingbooster on. Its set for 600+, but im not sure if it is actually getting up there since I have the window hidden and running in the background. Fairly sure it is.

I've been running into issues with svhost crashing on me, killing windows sharing and causing this:

Quote:Tracing route to youtube.com [64.15.120.233]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

7 4294967283 ms 4294967282 ms 4294967281 ms ^C

Somehow I think this might just be related to the high pings...

this only happens after svhost crashes the first time.

ok true. I just misunderstood you :-)

run "stats" via rcon, or use my fps-meter (see signature) ;-)

ok, the rest tells me, this is some windoze-specific problem, sorry I don't know enough about this, someone else probably needs help you here... is the ping using the normal ping command also so strange?

My bad let me expand a bit more on my previous post, that huge MS lag issue in tracert only happens after SVHost started using 100% of one core requiring me to kill it. I'm not sure if the pings are the same either way.

If the svhost doesn't need to be shut down due to 100% core usage, tracert is normal with 1-2MS a hop for the first 2-3.

Heres your fps monitor:
