Best linux distro for game server hosting?
#16
Arch, hands down. Gotta say Ubuntu is nice though.

Best platform would probably be Gentoo or SUSE (I hate suse though) in terms of stability and performance. But, any linux distro blows way past windows in terms of pure performance.

yeah i am not sure it matters which one just pick the one that you are familar with, but be aware installing the GUI or window manager will have a imapct on the servers performance. best off with command line but obviously this is only for those who know how to or those who are willing to learn.

It does?. Because I have a window manager running and don't notice a difference, other then probably 50 FPS. Meh.

I use the window manager so I can run my torrents in the background and at the same time look at conky. Well, that and having multiple terminals open at once blows away the command line.

it probably depends on your setup. with RT patches and servers running with realtime scheduling you will probably not note any difference (even not 50 fps). on the other hand, downloading torrents could affect your network performance and produce lags ;-)

Nahhh, I have the upload limited. Smile

Will there be any CPU increase if I follow your kernal guide Behaart?.
#22
probably a slight one (lowering latencies usually increases overhead). but CPU usage is not a well defined quantity, and definitively not what you should optimize for (unless you are some GSP who wants to sell as many servers as possible regardless of the quality Toungue)

BehaartesEtwas Wrote:gentoo has the most flexibility, so you can squeeze out the most performance. but you need to know what you are doing. so I recommend debian usually.

I'm guessing you use gentoo on your servers then? ;-)
#24
yes I am. but it's not like there was a notable change when I switched from debian to gentoo. kernel has a much bigger impact.

Yeah, i just tried it, took forever for me to figure out how to install it.
But hey, I learned a LOT about Linux through that experience.

No doubt that the best distribution is linux ubuntu. Specially for new linux users

We have always been a fan of CentOS 5.x and it is what all our game server machines run on

Highest Quality | Instant Setup | 24/7/365 Support | Locations World Wide

My clan's tech runs all the servers on Debian 32bit with a core customized by him.
Idk if he followed some guide or whatever, the servers run as they should be lol.

if your cpu is strongest, you use debian-ubuntu but not strong, you must use centos with default kernel..
