Best linux distro for game server hosting?

Is there a specific distro/kernel anyone would recommend for best performance hosting srcds game servers?

CentoOS, Ubuntu, Debian?
64bit vs 32bit?

Also does anyone have any experience running game servers using a VM Host like XenServer or ESXi?
Does using a VMHost impact game server performance?

DONT USE A VM FOR GAME SERVERS IT SUCKS...
Lots of people recommend Debian, however I use CentOS because thats just what i used from the start...

gentoo has the most flexibility, so you can squeeze out the most performance. but you need to know what you are doing. so I recommend debian usually.

WOW, I am getting 980-990FPS on debian "out of the box" vs 333-500FPS on CentOS 5.3

This is my first time using debian and so far I am impressed, thanks for the recommendation!

well, that is mostly only due to the different default kernel. if you want high-quality servers you should optimize your kernel in any case, then you have no difference between the distributions (w.r. to the kernel) - though with centos I am not so sure anymore they did some strange things I think...

I;m using Ubuntu Server 9.05 all I installed was the GNOME GUI it runs awesome. I get some lag when I was running 24 players because of comcast.

Ubuntu based on Debian and gets the 1000 fps out of the box

Purely depends on the environment and hardware. An OpenVZ VM with the appropriate amount of resources dedicated to it will actually run most games just fine. On the other hand, i would stay away from Xen, it's VM model doesn't offer the performance OpenVZ can.

Anything can suck if its not managed properly.

I aggree, i have Ubuntu server 32bit, it was doddle to setup as lan server, and running as VM getting 900fps sorted!

if anyone would like the instructions i used please let me know.
