uncompress: applet not found?

I'm trying to install srcds on ttylinux - a daunting task for a noob like me. I initially got the 'command not found' error, did the symbolic link, but then I get 'uncompress: applet not found', and on the next line, 'tar: short read'. I've tried for a good 12 hours to find a solution, but found nothing. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I tend to install "ncompress"

yum install ncompress
apt-get install ncompress

thats if your linux uses either of those methods to install
