[L4D] Working distribution?
#1
Hello nerds,

since our clan plans to move to another root server I'm facing the opportunity to change the distribution.

The main reason will be making L4D run without problems. Right now, the server crashes randomly when changing maps or the lobby connects to the server. It's unbareable and frustrating as hell.

Since I tried everything and asked everyone I'm now blaming Debian Lenny 64Bit.

The new machine will have the following specs:
  • CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-920 Quad-Core incl. HyperThreading
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR3 RAM
  • Dual-HDD: 2 x 750 GB SATA-II HDD (Software-RAID 1)
  • NIC: 1 GBit OnBoard

The hoster offers the following OS:
  • 32-Bit:
Debian 5.0 min, openSuSE 11.1 min, Ubuntu 9.04 min, CentOS 5.3 min
  • 64-Bit:
    Debian 5.0 min/LAMP*, openSuSE 11.1 min, Ubuntu 9.04 min, CentOS 5.3 min

So I ask you guys now which dist would be the best choice (aka which runs fine on your maching with l4d).

Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the tip. Ubuntu would have the charm that it's mostly like my beloved debian.

I run on cent OS 5.2 and have the same issue. Totally random too. Will crash on a map that worked the day before.

Update: I went with Ubuntu 64 Bit and it runs fine but one thing. Yesterday we tried to start Blood Harvest in Versus from a Lobby. The server crashed everytime and the lobby landed on the server on a different campaign (due to the server start map setting).

We tried it 3 times, everytime the same result. After voting to switch to Blood Harvest everything ran fine.

Strange behavior, so I'll try to delete the BH-maps and redownload it. Maybe it'll help.
