Random Server Visiblity (DZ Help)
#1
This is mainly a call out to the all knowing DZ. I have been experiencing random problems on my CSS server. Currently running on a duron 1200 sat in my basement using a wireless connection. I'm getting a excellent 54mb signal and there is no problems with network, I use windows RDP to run the box. everytime when I start the server it states connection to steam successful, but somethimes my friends who have my IP saved to favourites, can't see or connect to my server, even though I can view and play on LAN. i have the srcdsfpsboots wrote into my srcds batch as well which looks like this

start /high srcds.exe
start srcdsfpsboots.exe

or something like, not there at the moment (btw i like the gui, noobie).

Tried it with and without the fpsboost line and fired that up seperately, but doesn't seem to make any difference. Sometimes I can start it up straight away and others it takes 2 or 3 attempts before anyone can see it. Also do I really need 27020 open to my server as this makes it worse (27015 more successful).

Also why does my server loose visibility after a few hours anyway? any ideas anyone.

Also would like to fire back to this question, (i like to gui!!!) http://forums.srcds.com/showthread.php?tid=975

Hmm... So you're saying that 27015 more oftenly works? Use that then, it's the default port.

If the 27015 port more oftenly works, then that would maybe be a sollution to my server problems...

yeh dude. I always use 27015 and forward that port only to my server pc. my games pc always uses 27016 to connect to games.

I've got almost the same problem like you, try the things that I've tried, and it'll maybe work :|.

I use the GUI and dont put the port in my cfg but state it on the gui, however, you do not need to put your IP on the cfg anymore, it automatically uses your external ip when you pick internet. You may need to write the port in though if you use the console version. I can only ask my friends to see if they can see my server. its been up for 3 days non stop now and no problems. may have been fixed in an update.

Lol, well thank you very much ^^. I thought you meant DMZ and not me hehehehe.

Well lets have a look at this shall we. Now bear in mind its like 2-3 my time and I might miss a super obvious thing...

Regarding your .bat file to server: That is not possible. You still have to go through that interface before you can start it up.

For ports I just opened 27015-27025 for my server ( I use srctv also ) that way I can change it as needed.

Now regarding your server visibility. Is your IP static? If not this may effect how your server shows when your IP changes. Have you looked up your server at http://www.game-monitor.com to get an average uptime? If your IP keeps chaning its really hard to run a good server because the IP is what people use to bookmark your server.

If you have Cable or DSL, it usually costs like 1-2 dollors to make your ip static ( per month ). I must have my ip static so I can run the server and I also use it for PCAnywhere so I can help my other clients (computer repair's not server btw)

Finally, servers do not lose visibility as long as their IP is constant and the srcds.exe is running. Like when I switched to a program (link later) that monitors the server via a type of "player ping" our uptime went way up. Aug average up time is now 80%, a nice boost from 50. And next month we hope to be in the 95+ range. I am thinkin that your broadband connection closes everyso often or your IP changes.

***As a side note***

stuartjk thanks for requesting my help, however you are welcome to contact me via Xfire also. My sig has my user name^^

Well thats about all the info I can give you for now. I am going to go ahead and head off to bed. If you have any other questions regard this issue or another issue on the server. Feel free to post em here stuartjk. I will get em in the morning or Afternoon tomorrow.

I don't like the way you "called out" to zealot. Not that I'm jealous, but I believe that you could have written it in another way. "A main call to all the wise pros on the forum" Smile would be a better way I think.
There are alot of wise people on this forum, and favorizing zealot like that may make them don't care about you because "if hes asking zealot, then zealot should answer him and not me". It's just what I think.

P.S. Sorry all you pros out there if I somehow offended you by my theory.

sorry dude. didnt mean to offend anyone, it's just that dz seems to be the most active pro 'lately'. I would have made a general call, but I was wanting a quick decision. it seemed not to work anyway as he thought I was talking about someone else. It's a respect thing, I didn't want to pm him or add him to xfire as I did not know if he would take offence, so I just put out a call.

Anyway hopefully the only pros out there who should have been offended by this request should be the ones who actually acted like that.

Think about it, at work you have an entire team of IT support guys (maybe 20-30 or 200-300), each one knows pretty much the same, you have 1 or 2 in that team you talk to or hear about regularly, who you gonna ask, send a general mail to everyone or ask the one who everyone knows? Even if he asks someone else, you get it done quicker. Lets put it this way, everyone knows him for a reason.

By the way I'm not hitting out at you Doggie in anyway, I'm just making a point. By the way, DZ contacted me personally as a forward to this thread and he's a good guy, likes to help thats why he's all over this forum. Take his advise wisely.

I think a thread should be started for people willing to offer support on issues, kind of like a hall of heros. HINT HINT! Also stating whether or not they are willing to be PM'd for instant advise.

Anyone else?

BTW Doggie, any questions give me a shout. you whats your server, Might bob on. and Most importantly HAVE FUN! Its a game not a battleground.

You've got a point there stuart.
I wasn't angry at you and telling you "do this, do that!" Smile I was just telling you what I think.
So, let's forget this, shall we? Big Grin

My IP is 81.232.26.91:27019, but I have some problem right now, so it's not online yet. I'll send ya a PM (if I remember Wink) when it's online.

P.S. My comp is under repair, so I wont be able to play on your server yet...

Yes, the server is up, but it isn't showing in the master list, so noone can join unless I give them the IP Sad.

EDIT\ I forgot to mention that because the server is on the home network, having it on for too long takes too much bandwidth. So I'm not allowed to have it on too long.

how many players. what else you running on the network? ie downloads, other servers or is it just affecting normal surfing, if so what bandwidth you got and how many man server?

reason I ask is i've got a 512 up 256 down b/w and a 7 man server, higher than it should be and frequently full, but it rarely affects my usual traffic, I have x-fire, ubi.com, steam, bt home computing (dont ask) and msn, all running, server on sep machine but same line, and never any problems sufreing.
