Experiencing lag, tick rates?
#1
Hey there, I run my Team Fortress 2 server for a LAN with a total of about 8 people playing. I've been experiencing lag from the get-go and am wondering if I have my tick rates settings wrong. I'm still very new to running this.

My server box:
AMD Sempron 2800+ @ 2.0ghz (single core)
1 GB RAM
Windows XP Pro
Gigabit router, gigabit hubs
Team Fortress 2

command line additions:
Quote:-game tf -console +exec server.cfg +maxplayers 24 +map ctf_2fort

server.cfg

I doubt it is the rate settings. Looks to be more likely your pc. SRCDS does not like Semprons.

RAM might be an issue too.

Nah it should be fine, SRCDS does not need more than 512MB of my knowlegde.

I should probably add in that I run a dedicated server for Counter-Strike: Source on this box as well. Not at the same time, of course. I don't get any lag with 8 players connected along with a dozen bots or so running around.

When running the server with 8 people in it, what is the ram and cpu usage? That will narrow down if its the server or not.

Are you trying to run a 33 tick, 66 tick or 100? Cause your settings look all funny to me. Are you trying to get quality performance out of the server or just run it at low settings due to the CPU specs.

Woah woah, you can't have a rate of 0 on a 66 tick, it'll make players lag, I recommend 25000 max on 66 tick and 8000 minimum, Although I run my 66 at 30000 rate >.>

I thought there might be an issue with the tick rate settings. I pretty much just copy-pasted the .cfg and tweaked a few of the basic settings I was familiar with. Thanks for the help. Next time we play, I'll post whether this resolved the issue or not.
