the +ip <ip> sometimes gives that message. What you then can do is add the ip to your server.cfg ONLY if you get this message. If you add it to your autoexec.cfg you will still have a UDP issue. I have done it via server.cfg for ages and has been working fine for me. I use my external IP and any player can connect.

Edit:

I also have DMZed my computer via the router. I would recomend doing this permamently only if you have a software firewall on the server. I would use Mcafee or ISS Black Ice for software if you need it.

alright.
heres the deal:

i put ip <ip> in server.cfg

no change

then i exited ZoneAlarm (which i have configured to forward ports to the dedicated server so it shouldnt be a problem)

but now it comes up with these errors:

Code:
client <name> connected (10.1.1.1:50243)
No challenge from 10.1.1.1:1057
Bad challenge from 10.1.1.1:1057
dropped <name> from server
Reason: Error verifying STEAM UserID ticket(server was unable to contact the authenticaiton server, 31)
Bad challenge from 10.1.1.1:50834
Bad challenge from 10.1.1.1:50834
Bad challenge from 10.1.1.1:xxxxx
...

(it continues like that for about 15 lines, with different ports for every few bad challenges)

i am assuming this is either a connection problem (i.e. my connection is too slow, or too far away from the valve servers), or that my router isnt mapping ports onto my computer correctly

any help?

This is just from old queries:

No challenge from 10.1.1.1:1057
Bad challenge from 10.1.1.1:1057

Nothing to be worried about, its not players connecting. Its HL1 style pings to the server. However I found them anoying and turned them off. You can turn them off with this command:

sv_enableoldqueries 1

friends I have a question for you. Is your server able to become VAC secured? Is it saying that it connected to the test server correctly? Or is it disabled on start up? friends you have done a really good job at stickin at this so I am going to try to help you to the best of my ability.

ok thanks for that. but there was a player connecting, like in the lines

client <name> connected (10.1.1.1:50243)
No challenge from 10.1.1.1:1057
Bad challenge from 10.1.1.1:1057
dropped <name> from server
Reason: Error verifying STEAM UserID ticket(server was unable to contact the authenticaiton server, 31)

ok ill use the old style queries

thanks for that

i dont have my server with me here at the moment but i believe on connection it says something like

Code:
connection to authentication servers successful
adding master server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:27011 (or something)
adding master server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:27011 (a different one)

thank you all for helping

next i am going to try a DMZ and turning off zonealarm

i am hoping this wont work because it is a major security risk and i would rather have a safe server....

thanks again

This shows that you can connect to valve servers.

alright I DMZed and exited zonealarm (which, by the way, is what caused the 31 error before (i regard error 31 to be better than the invalid userID ticket one)), but it now comes up with the usual userID ticket message..

no 31 Sad

at least 31 would mean it was my connection and not some weird thing

anyway, it also took up so much bandwidth that i was kicked off msn while running it just in case that helps give anyone any ideas...

thank you so much for your help anyway

Error 31? I have never heard of an error like that. Please explain a little more about it.

error 31 is just a temporary miscommunication or stuff up when the client tries to send data to the steam servers. Sometimes i get it while joining a server, but one reconnect usually does it. Its listed on steampowered.com i think...
