No one ever reads them, maybe one in 20 posts actually have the info needed, but most of them don't. They usually are like this:
Quote:How do I start server? Why is $thing not working?
And other non-answerable questions because they don't read the readme. You (site admins) either need to add it to the posting page, or have it pop up when you click post thread.

Well the problem is that we aren't allowed to do it. It has to be coded into the forums, mainly by FTP. But that'd break some rules

pengy,
I completely agree. Talk about rolling the same wheel over and over again.
How many mods are on this site btw? I'm thinking there are 3? and active? I'm not sure.
I looked around and here would be some suggestions to maybe help/improve support since SRCDS is an immensely used application:
1. Invoke thread moderation. Mods view it, prior to it being submitted. Its a standard feature from teh ACP of MyBB, like any forum software.
2. Some additional plugins here that I found could be used to help weed out useless threads:
http://mods.mybboard.net/view/redirect-your-users-when-they-activate-their-accou
http://mods.mybboard.net/view/new-thread-with-rules
http://mods.mybboard.net/view/force-users-to-view-a-thread
Maybe the owner, Drocona?, might see these as useful to install.
3. IGNORE all threads that don't MEET the README. Don't POST on them!

There are 5 mods which we consider active. Of those 5, 2 are admins. Team List
MjrNuT Wrote:1. Invoke thread moderation. Mods view it, prior to it being submitted. Its a standard feature from teh ACP of MyBB, like any forum software.
While this is an option, this proves annoying for everyone as there is a wait for questions to be posted and can then be answered. Also, we do not have active mods in all time zones.
MjrNuT Wrote:2. Some additional plugins here that I found could be used to help weed out useless threads
We do not have any access to install plugins. Plus, you need the most recent version of the forums to install such plugins.
MjrNuT Wrote:Maybe the owner, Drocona?, might see these as useful to install.
Dro is actually not the owner. Also, he does not have this access either. We ARE in the process of working this out, however.
MjrNuT Wrote:3. IGNORE all threads that don't MEET the README. Don't POST on them!
Even better:
1) Post a link to the readme
2) Report 'em. We actually read them (As long as Beaver doesn't do the reporting ).
ON THIS NOTE
I'm going to tune up the readme area. Expect to be annoyed.
If it's a larger pain then a help, POST HERE AND LET ME KNOW. We'll fix it :-D

Put the code for the link and img tags in the readme saying "Tell other people to read the readme"

I will try to add that... Good idea! I thought I had an issue with that though...

Tell me what you think of this: http://forums.srcds.com/viewcat/4
If you like it, I'll do that everywhere.

You might have to put them in code tags or something.
Code:

Mooga,
Thanks for taking the time to explain the situation. It's quite complicated and you guys are making do with what you have. Very understandable and thanks for that.
My list was just suggestions. Sorry if they came off as forceful, as they were not intended to be.
Question: what do you mean about Report a thread/post? I know that its generally for abuse or something, but here it seems you have other uses for such a mechanism. Please explain or just PM me.
Let me know if I can be of assistance,
Thanks

If you think a post is repetitive and pointless, you are welcome to report it.
Just don't abuse the feature.
Also, I'll change the forums to look like General something over the next day or two. I'm very busy with my internship or I would do it now

Alright. I think I covered the main areas.
Tell me what you think and what not.
HOPEFULLY this will help even more. If not, we'll work on another solution
Thanks for your input and I hope you continue to give your input.

If there is an incomplete thread, no Readme details, and someone posts the Readme link, I don't think another mod should respond. It's like ignoring the fact that the OP should update their incomplete details.
Just a thought for consistency and setting an example? No biggie if its not a biggie

Thats the code (I uploaded it, so mooga doesnt run out of bandwith on his site) And yes, just today, 2 posts have been made without reading the big banner on top saying read the readme....

What's wrong with that? Are you criticizing a thread, because someone actually tried to help? I believe it's better than nothing. Atleast the information the mod/someone else posted could be useful for the thread starter....
However if it's the same post twice, I see your point.
never mind...............
