1000 FPS

Does Ubuntu desktop support 1000fps out of box or is it server edition only?

1000fps doesn't really depend on the distributon but on the kernel. I could imagine that especially the server edition does not support 1000 fps out of the box (i.e. without recomiling the kernel), as "usual" servers (i.e. internet servers) don't need low latencies. desktop systems might be better optimized for low latency. but in any case it is recommended to optimize the kernel (e.g. using my howto, see signature). then it does not matter, which edition you use...

The whole point is I dont want to recompile the kernel. I understand that Ubuntu is 1k fps out of box but I am unsure of whether or not it is server edition only or if the desktop edition also has 1000fps out of box.

Most of the time, the server edition will have a 1000hz kernel so you will be able to get 1000fps, but it will spike down alot...

The hz setting in the kernel isn't the only option for obtaining a stable 1000 fps. There is a bit involved. I would suggest reading up on kernels and how to compile your own before you try this.

you won't get *stable* fps without a custom kernel. stability is much more important than the nominal value...
