Which Version of Linux?

yodaddy. We're here for you. We'll get through this crazy Linux command line business together. Just jump in and install Linux without a GUI. Once you learn to use it you'll never go back.

btw: many people trying to optimize the kernel for srcds and having problems are using centos. I don't know if this is because centos is not so suitable for game servers (hard to tell if you don't know the other side of the statistics ;-)), but I guess you would go better with a debian-based distribution (debian itself, ubuntu, what so ever...).

I have tried debian, but I don't see the same performance as Centos... might just be me.

If you're using a server, I would suggest a server-edition of anything. Having a gui on a server is just plain silly, and a resource-hog for no reason. If you're looking for a game panel for Linux, I am the author of the open source Game Panel X (just google it), give it a try if you please.

Newbie here... What does Game Panel X do? I might want to try it. I'm currently on Ubuntu desktop but my Poweredge supports the server version. I would love to switch over if I could get a grip on all this command line stuff.

It basically will manage and control a game server. You can create users, and those users get game servers. You can set what options go with each server, and start and stop it, all from within the website.

You could try Swift Panel which is currently free all summer until version 2.0 is released, It supports all versions of Linux and only requires root access and SCREEN to be installed (su yum install screen).
