Which Version of Linux?
#1
So i have used linux 1 time on a vps, but now i have a dedicated server ordered.

Specs:
Dual (2x) Intel Xeon E5520 2.26ghz Quad Core (8 cores total)
16gb of DDR3 1066MHZ ECC RAM (8 x 2 GB)
2 x 500gb 7200rpm sata 2
tyan g20 7002 barebones

I am wondering what version of linux i need to use in order to run stable 1000fps or 2000fps CSS and CS1.6 servers for myself and my friends. Server will be hosted at 100mbs line at a data center in chi. So bandwidth will not be a issue.

Also is it possible to have a remote desktop to a linux server? so i can view the desktop and run programs like that or is that a windows server only feature, also is it hard to boost fps to 1000 on a windows 2003 server?

There's a lot of that I'm not qualified to answer, but I can tell you that it's often very easy to connect via SSH to a system that's running GNU/Linux. I've never tried to use a remote desktop that showed me a GUI on the server, because I haven't ever installed a GUI on a server. It probably just takes a little more work, but I'm sure it's possible. Windows is generally a little behind the times with that sort of thing, in my experience.

So what version of linux do you recomend for running game servers? for performance reliblity and ease to boost the kernal to 1000hz or 1500hz

I only ever use Ubuntu for configuring servers, I have no basis for comparison. I don't know about compatibility with srcds, but I do know Red Hat is good for servers. Most of the Linux servers I have to deal with professionally use Red Hat.

well, linux commands seem to be hard since i dont know it i just got done installing ubuntu server to one of my pcs, installed the gui, startx, then loged in, was at the desktop, but after that very veyr confushing, Toungue installing programs hard, so i guess i will just not install the gui and try to SSH it from my own pc and see how it works, i just want to host 1000 fps css servers but in windows xp pro i could not pass 512fps no matter what i tried.

You can use VNC to remote into the computer. Also I use CENTOS for the server (not as good as a gui as ubuntu)

I'm no expert with GNU/Linux, but I'm more than happy to help you learn everything I know about about using Bash.

i dont know if i should try and learn linux or go to windows server 2003, but only thing i dont like with windows server 2003 is i saw that scrds does not like 64bit and i will need 64bit to support the 16gb of ram, also it does not support 1000fps servers unless u hardcore modify the server which i dont plan on doing. but tcadmin is a plus.

Question, whats the best linux distro for hosting gameservers must also support either GAMECP or swiftpanel. i dont like unbuntu, well the gui at least never really tried the command line portion of it other than to install all the stuff.

You dont need to hardcore modify the server, you just need to enable hpet in the motherboard if it suppourts it.

if you want to maintain a linux server you will need the command line. I would recommend debian, that's very similar to ubuntu (if you forget about GUI).

Ubuntu Server 9.04 x64. And also try ext4 as fat system...
Documentation is good, and if you have questions, you know where to ask Wink
"the box said 'requires windows xp or better'. so i installed linux"
