Question on hosted servers
#1
Hey all,

Im interested in hosted servers, and have come across a point of interest.

Is it a matter of plonking say my updated and working hlds directory onto the FTP (ensuring all configs are set to that hosted info) and then runnning the server through usual .bat run command?

Or is there a tool you need.

I know of TCAdmin and things like that but just not really sure if its worth paying more for a hosted server per slot, rather then paying for hosting which is cheaper and just running it myself.

Cheers!

Are you talking about purchasing a webserver from a site such as godaddy.com?

I'm confused by what you're trying to ask here...

Yea,

Like GSP's charge per slot or fixed fee, obviously it costs more because it needs something more grunty then your average FTP file hosting box.

However I see hosting plans that are Unlimited data and speed for $x amount and then GSP servers which cost 2-3 times more then that.

So got me thinking, why not host it myself and setup myself but then I thought maybe there is a reason.

And I found it!

They host them via Game Panels I believe such as TCAdmin and ClientEXEC and some various other cPANEL applications.

I googled all over the place and could not wrap my head around it.

So I might play around with some and see if its possible, but if anyone here that owns a GSP and would like to shed some light on it, would be nice Big Grin

I'm not sure if this is what your talking about, but you can't run a server over FTP or a web hosting plan. You need RDP access with Windows or SSH for Linux. TCAdmin and those are to be able to control game servers on your Windows/Linux box. You don't just install it on your webhost and it sets up servers on there.

Sorry if this wasn't even close. Smile

Yep thought that what the case. Your very close Beaver, but a wee bit deeper...

So what happens, they install the server files into a machine, install a panel manager, and is that it?

and RDP setup obviously to those machines.... but yea im more or less wanting to know how I would go about running a server without paying a GSP for one be it slots or fixed price.

Example: I have atm a tf2 server running sweet as with admin plug, I want to make this into a DS on a hosting service so the public can play on it.

However I want a cheap deal rather then more through a GSP, so what would I need in regards to a datacentre to run such a server?

Cheers Big Grin

Well it is obviously cheaper to rent one server from a gsp, but if you want to host multiple, it is cheaper to host your own via a dedicated server. You can either build one and colo a server (which is cheaper in the long run), or you can rent a dedicated server.

Do you have some time to explain how its actually run, not specifics..... but like........ what is used for your generic 1 server being hosted:

Server files + configs
Machine to run the server (colo?)
fast net connection
A game panel tool (such as TCAdmin etc)

Is that all thats involved (apart from setting IP's on the DS and the various OS configs....)

don't want a "how to" more just a "this is the overview of how it goes down.

Cheers!

Well if you are only planning on running 1 server, a bare Core2Duo with a couple gigs of ram will go for around $500. For colo your looking at $100 per month, so its not really worth it. It would be cheaper just renting a server from a company for less than $50. That way you get higher quality and support.
