32 slot TF2 server, what hardware requirements?
#1
Hello everyone, im currently running a 32 slot tf2 server on a 2.5ghz L5420, as of now when the server is filled, according to htop cpu usage hits 96% (i know this isn't a very accurate gauge) At any rate, anything over ~24 players and server side fps becomes completely unstable, and as it nears 30+ players fps sits at around 60. At 32 players tickrate even starts to drop! Is anyone here running a 32 slot tf2 with stable fps above 250, without any tickrate drop? Thanks!

Im not entirely sure what your asking? TF2 is hard-coded to 66 tick, it will drop as low as 47 when everyone is on screen at the same time, and its 32 people, but most of the time it wont go much lower than the high 50's.

oh.. right Smile

EDIT: I think you have to give us more info, like OS? Optimized kernel? etc..

What is your kernel? type in uname -a to figure out, also are you getting more than 47 fps in game? Because your fps controls the max tickrate you can get. You also want to optimize your kernel by following this guide by beaverbeliver http://wiki.fragaholics.de/index.php/EN:Linux_Kernel_Optimization

Sorry guys for not including more info, i didnt think it would be necessary. Im running debian lenny. Ive tried every kernel under the sun with every option you could imagine. Ive compiled at least 100 kernels, including everything in that wiki. As of now im running 2.6.29.1 1000Hz with no RT, and everything runs great. Only high-slot servers (30+) have any type of issue. That is why i suspected it was just a hardware limitation.

Well if its optimized, why does it only run at 60 fps?

It will run 1000FPS all day long under 24 players, the issue is once you start going further than that fps starts to become unstable, and once you hit 30+ users depending on how many sentry's they've built fps never go above 60, and tickrate starts to become affected.

Seems like a bad kernel build to me then

May i ask what kernel/options/hardware your are running as you seem to imply that you don't have any issues with filled 32 slot tf2 servers and fps stability?
