Best linux config
#1
Hello, I have been searching for a long time on many for these things for quite a while now and I cannot seem to find good settings for my server. Let me fill you in on what my current box is:

Debian
gcc (GCC) 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13)
Copyright © 2003 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
ldd (GNU libc) 2.3.2
Copyright © 2003 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

kernel version: #1 Mon May 16 16:47:51 JST 2005
Linux gameserver 2.4.27-2-386 #1 Mon May 16 16:47:51 JST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

AMD 2500+ CPU
512mb DDR
ASUS a7v8x-x mobo
20gig HD

Box is connected to a t1.

Now that u know about my box, im trying to find the best config for a server.cfg, Tickrate, max ping...etc....

Is my box good enough to run at 100 tickrate? Better to stay at 66? Max players i can hold?

Maxrate...minrate...etc

Im kinda lost on this whole idea. I used to run a server back in WONID days and my server was ALWAYS full. Even on a crappyer box. As soon as steam came out, my server went down the drain...am I doing something wrong? Why arnt my players pings like they used to in the WONID days and why does there seem to be more lag?

Btw the IP is 216.85.179.70:27015

I also get this error

Executing dedicated server config file
Adding master server 69.28.151.178:27011
Adding master server 69.28.151.162:27011
Could not establish connection to Steam servers.
VAC secure mode disabled.

I did a search on it but on one gave any solutions

1.5mb/sec t1:
minrate 4000, maxrate 20000
maxupdaterate 50

512k/sec t1
minrate 4000, maxrate 12500
maxupdaterate 30

2500+ xp probably wont handle srcds too well. (especially on a pc133 ram based mobo) 66tick is about the best youre going to be able to do (on a 16slot, probably will get laggy above that).

bumping up your fps_max to 450 will give a little better gameplay too (more cpu usage aswell), but i think i remember reading something that AMDs wont render more even with that setting

im running a server on a 2ghz xeon 1gb ram gentoo linux, game gets choppy running 100tic with 14+ players. i have to bump my maxupdaterate down to 25, and fps_max to 150 on assault, inferno, port. these maps kill cpu performance

also, upgrade to kernel 2.6, youll have way better performance. configure your kernel variables for the athlon xp based machines. make sure you have MTTR enabled, HW support for random number generator seems to help too. best kernel options for performance are IO schedulers, disable the anticipator scheduler, and build-in the deadline scheduler

Thanks so much war.

I had my bro update to the newest 2.6 version for me for my version of linux, but he said I was on my own with the

"configure your kernel variables for the athlon xp based machines. make sure you have MTTR enabled, HW support for random number generator seems to help too. best kernel options for performance are IO schedulers, disable the anticipator scheduler, and build-in the deadline scheduler"

How exactly would I do that? Do I have to compile a new kernel for that? Any help is very much appreciated. Im kinda a linux nub so tuts are nice.

Contact me with your ssh details and i can build uit for you, OR you can post your lspci, lsusb, and perhaps i can build a .config for your kernel, but would be easier if i could ssh into your box

If you could build a config file for me that would be REALLY nice. Im not to comfortable with giving out my SSH info, im sure you can understand that.
