HLDS performance on an old comp. (linux config etc)

Hey! My HLDS performance is pretty bad, the computer i have as a server is pretty old. So what are the "main"-things to have in a linux config to make it stable etc? I dont need high fps, just stable fps.

What game are you running?
The old HL games shouldn't have issues...

EDIT: Would it be able to handle multi instances of HLDS? 300fps stable is my goal.. without killing the CPU etc..

Well well.. back to kernelconfig.. CFQ or AS? HPET or not? Hrtimer or not? Dynamicticks or not? Optimize for small systems? etc etc. You probably see what i need answers to :p..
