[Resolved] Error Running hldsupdatetool
#1
I spoke with Drocona earlier today about this, but need some more help.

I've installed the HLDS Update Tool and run it using the following command:
hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "orangebox" -dir C:\HL2DS

Everytime it downloads the files, it gets to ~95% done, downloads the file:
sound\weapons\underwater_explode3.wav
...and gets a "connection reset by peer."

Having done this 3 times (twice myself, and all 3 times on the same server) and having it always fail after this file it seems a little hard to believe that this is a server stress issue, or that there's a problem locally. Could there be an issue with the server hosting these files? Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Following the crash, a verify all runs through a selection of files and then reports that that everything is up to date. Running the dedicated server exe with the command line:
srcds.exe -game empires +maxplayers 14 -port 27015 -console +map emp_canyon -autoupdate
...results in a DOS prompt loading and promptly closing (the empires folder does exist and is in the orangebox directly, this same mod has worked on many other servers).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Whatever game you're trying for, don't use quote marks...otherwise, I'm learning something new w/ this topic.

This is out of date, orangebox will download the source SDK from The Orange Box.

If quotes are an issue, then why does the srcds tutorial use them?

In any event, I appreciate the reply. Thanks for trying to help, if you have further ideas please let me know.

Well, I am learning something new...on a late Friday night...sheesh!

I thought I'd give a try here.

I made C:\hl2ds folder like you. d/led hldsupdatetool.exe to that folder and ran it to install the tool. Made the folder c:\hl2ds\hlserver

It looks like there are 3 steps to do here:

1. d/l the orangebox
2. d/l hl2dm
3. d/l empires 750 MB full install

all this from the following link: http://www.empiresmod.com/download.php

In --> folder c:\hl2ds\hlserver

Used the following bat to d/l orangebox

Code:
HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game orangebox -dir . -verify_all

Followed by hl2mp

Code:
HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game hl2mp -dir . -verify_all

I did not do step 3, which was the 750 MB d/l, b/c I needed to sleep.

So, I'm not sure I helped you, but i learned something and maybe what I've shown here will help you. it took some CLOSE reading to see what I think needs done in terms of files.[/code]

I will give this a shot. I'm curious, when you d/led orangebox did you get a connection reset by peer message? If you didn't, and I do, then it stands to reason that I'm still going to have a problem.

Try this line:
hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game orangebox -dir C:\HL2DS -verify_all -retry

Please do not PM me for server related help

Got all the way to the 'Base Source Shared Sounds' where it usually has errors, and reports:

Connection Reset, WinSock Error 10054 "Connection reset by peer"

It appears that the error was related to the mod. Got some help finding additional mod installation instructions and now it works fine. Thanks all for the help!

Long story short, the Empires 2.23 Dedicated Server Full Install is TOTALLY MESSED UP.

If you have to use the 2.23 Full install, here's what to do:

1. Get HLDSupdatetool.
2. Create folder, I used C:\HL2DS>, and put the update tool in it.
3. Go to Start-->Run, type "cmd", press enter.
4. Change directories to the folder you created, then type:

HLDSupdatetool.exe -command update -game orangebox -dir [your directory]

5. Wait. You are now basically downloading Half-life 2. This took me 1.5-2 hours.
6. Once that is done, download the Empires 2.23 Full .zip from the website, and extract the folder "Empires" to your [your folder]/orangebox> directory.

7. NOW THE TRICKY PART. Download the 2.23 patch, and extract that to the same place. Yes, we are patching 2.23 with 2.23.

8. Create shortcut to srcds.exe, edit shortcut properties, add:
-game empires +maxplayers 14 -port 27015 -console +map emp_canyon -autoupdate

to the end of the shortcut target.

The 2.23 FULL install is BROKEN!!!! I can't scream it loud enough. Make sure you install the 2.23 full before installing the 2.23 patch. That makes sure that the not-broken patch files overwrite the broken 2.23 full files.

So:
USE THE ORANGE BOX UPDATE, NOT THE TEAM FORTRESS UPDATE.
Make sure to overwrite the sh~ files with the good ones from the patch.

Thanks to [VIPER] Vicky for your input. Hopefully admins will replace broken server files with not broken server files.

Would be nice of you to link that issue here so others that may encounter it will also truly find the issue resolved. You've pretty much left the thread...at a dead end, you know.
