Connection Closed

Using Ubuntu 8.10 on virtual box.
Trying to Install srcds.
I type ./steam it says

"Checking Boostrapper version..."
"Getting Version 34 of Steam HLDS Update Tool"
"Connection Closed by Peer"

Is Virtual Box the problem? Or is this also found on normal installations?

firewall problem? or some restrictions of the virtual box?

n.b.: don't expect a nice gameplay when running srcds on a virtual server. it will usually be very laggy.
