Windows or Linux servers..

Based on experiences that people have had, what OS would you use to run your servers on? If you could list the specs of the server you ran it on to, that would be helpful.

Thanks!

Agreed on windows xp pro. Although its not a specific 'server' build of windows its very stable and cost effective.

I've always only used linux for cs servers.
had three different boxes

1st box specs:
started with rh 9, then wbel 3, then rhel 4
2.4 ghz pentium 4, 1 gb ram, 74 gb, wd raptor

2nd box specs:
rhel 4
3.0 ghz pentium 4, 1 gb ram, 40 gb hd

3rd box specs:
rhel 4
dual opteron 250s, 2 gb ram, dual wd raptors in raid 1

the biggest advantage I've seen with linux is that the autoupdate works really well. IDK if they fixed the auto update for windows, but I know when theres a server update, everyones in my area is trying to connect to my server because the other local servers use windows, and don't get updated right away. not to mention linux is virtually free.

I think you may hear a lot of arguements about which performs better, so I'll leave that alone.

I prefer windows as I can make bat files easily. With linux i have no idea how to make the "shell extensions" >< I am a dos guy at heart lol

My past experiences with Linux have been a lot of memory leaks, which causes CPU spikes..can anyone confirm that?

This is the best advice of the lot.

If you know linux well enough to troubleshoot it into working (and seriously, that's what you'll be doing for hours), then go the linux route. It's free, and generally solid as a rock, plus in my experiance, it will make better use of less system specs (so long as you compile everything from scratch to specifically work with your hardware- see gentoo.org).

If you know Windows well enough to pop a server up and get it going, then I'd stick with windows.

Myself, I've got a server set up running Windows Server 2003, which happily sits in a datacenter. I just run the server in console mode, and hacked it into a service which runs in the background without needing anyone to be logged in to have it running. It runs perfectly for me. Smile

Generally, it all depends on your distro, and the packages you're running with it.

If you're running Redhat with KDE and lots of bells and whistles, you might leak memory like a sivv.

If you compile Gentoo or Debian onto a box to have nothing but a Counter strike Source server and shh to get into the box, there's nothing around that can eat memory, unless the SRCDS executable is poorly programmed (which is possible, I've never worked with it myself, but I doubt it).
