Can this box handle a server?

Question
Hi there Big Grin

I have an old box in my basement that's been sitting there since a coons age and I was wondering if it has the ability to run a srcds. I would prefer to put it to use rather than leave it on the ground.

The computer specifications are as follows:

- XP PRO
- Athlon 1.2 Ghz
- 768 MB (RAM) + GFX memory

Rate:

- 512 Upstream

**********************
Feedback will be much appreciated.

Thx in advance
Cheers Cool

OS and ram are ok for bout 12/16 people,
Ur upstream isnt that good.
I have 1000kb/s upload and struggle to get a stable server with 20 people.
But yes server will run.

If you do decide to run this server, please set rates as follows,
sv_maxrate 5000
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxupdaterate 10
in server cfg. this will help stable the server.

WHAT? 10 tickrate? lol use these rates. . .
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxrate 10000 or sv_maxrate 14000
sv_mincmdrate 0
sv_maxcmdrate 34
sv_minupdaterate 0
sv_maxupdaterate 34

With that connection I suggest 33 tickrate with about 14-16 players.

Another question: is that the computer you play on? If so, read my signature. In your case, if you do run the game on that computer, I would recommend NOT hosting a server at all.

with rates that high server WONT be stable, youmight get good ping then BAM skyrockets.

No, itll only skyrocket when people join. Oh btw, those were the rates I used when hosting a server from my house a looong time ago. had the same upload, except I handled 18 players. Worked fine, had fastdl, no ping spikes, 33 tick.

Nah I don't play on that piece o' crap Big Grin

This is my rig Cool

- Vista Ultimate 64-bit
- 8 Gigs RAM
- ATI RADEON HD 4870 X2
- Intel Core 2 QX9770 Quad Core + 3.2 GHz
- 1000 Watt PSU
- Thermal cooling
- Two, 1 Terabyte internal hard drives
- Alienware Case

----------------------
I run a 14 slot 66 tic on this PC with no problems regarding lag or ping spikes. I figure the hardware compensates for the lack of bandwidth.

This is somewhat related, however not to the principal issue. If I were to insert a parameter such as the following ( -heapsize 3140608 ) in my "srcds.exe" target for my 14 slot server do you think it would make much of a difference? And do any of you know parameters targeting the CPU utilization as heapsize is dedicated to physical memory?

Thanks for all the help that was provided and i'm terribly sorry for the double post Toungue
Cheers Big Grin
