need some help starting it up!

well fist things first, i'm a noob to all this, second thing i dont spell all that good so dont mind that.
so i have been following the windows tutorials and when i get to the part where i go to start and type in cmd, and the window pops up i enter all the little "codes" (like C:, cd srcds, ect.). When i put in the cd srcds it sayd the following, the system cannot find the path specified.
Then when i put in the next code it says the following,"'hldsupdatetool' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." (word for word)

whats wrong and how do i fix it? plz anwser soon so i can fix it!
