"Lag" spikes
#1
So, I've set up a server (12slot, 100TR, 500FPS) on the following dedicated server (machine):

2U System with 6x HotSwap bays, 510W EPS Powersupply, Lowprofile
Intel Xeon L5420, 4 Core at 2,50 Ghz, 2x 6MB L2 Cache, FSB1333
Tyan Tempest i5100W Mainboard, S5376, 2x GB Lan, VGA
12 GB DDR2 PC667 DDR2-Ram registered ECC, Kingston
Western Digital 500GB SATA2 HDD RE3 24/7, 16MB Cache, 7200RPM

Connection is 100mb/s, I'm not sure about the upload speed, but I beliave it's pretty good aswell. Here are the servers rate settings:

sv_maxrate 30000 //Netspeed - Max
sv_minrate 20000 //Netspeed - Min
sv_mincmdrate 66
sv_maxcmdrate 101
sv_maxupdaterate 101 //Tickrate - Max
sv_minupdaterate 66 //Tickrate - Min
sv_unlag 1 // Enables player lag compensation
sv_maxunlag 0.750 // Maximum lag compensation in seconds

We play 5v5 on the server every day, and it runs pretty smooth, but there seems to be a very very small lag spike on every 5-15 seconds. These lag spikes aren't really ruining the game, but I just want it running perfect. Note that when this happens the TickRate doesn't drop, there is no choke, loss, and pings don't go up even a little. Everything stays at normal when this occurs. Note that these lag spikes are very small and last like 0,05 - 0,1 seconds, but you can still notice the game stop for a moment (a really short moment)^^ Other teammates could also notice these small spikes, we all have our rates set to 25000/100/100. So, what's the problem?

I can also feel them when playing 1v1.

Ah, and the CPU usage stays the same, and servers FPS are completely constant.

Are you sure it isn't yourself?

Since your specs should easily hold that.

Yeah, I've thought about that, but could this actually be my PC? After all, why would such spikes only appear from time to time, I'd understand low FPS (which is 30-70 in my case -.-)... anyways, I'll ask some more people about it.

It could be your own personal computer. Smile

That server with those specs, shouldn't give problems at all.

Actually, 2 friends just came on the server, I didn't tell them about this lag spikes. After 2min of playing one of them said "rr map, cuz it's laggy", the other one agreed. Which means there has to be something going on with the PC... I was thinking about the upload speed, could this actually be the cause (and is there a way to check the upload speed of the server just through using putty). Or do you guys have another idea what could be causing this?

Check upload speed at: http://www.speedtest.net. (Remember to choose a location near you!)

did you measure the server fps with the fps meter? if its a software problem of your server (e.g. wrong config, kernel problem, ...) you should see some drops there (not every 10-15 secs, because it measures only every 5 secs and will not hit every drop). please post a screen shot.

Damn, my server is cursed. It has a simetric connection of 100mb/s, which means it has 100mb/s download and 100mb/s upload connection. Thinking again, is that even enough, since some people have a gigabit line (that's 1000mb/s, right?)? Regarding the server FPS, the line in the FPSmeter is as straight as it can be. I left it run all the way 'til the end, and the maximum drop was to around 490. What the heck is causing this then?

100 MBit/s is more than enough, but maybe its your ISP where your server is hosted. if his connection to the rest of the internet is at its limits you will get lags...

Ok, I don't really understand that? What do you mean by "at its limits", and can they actually do something that will get rid of this lag on my server. Because it's starting to get really irritating, as every single person that comes on notices it and whines about it. And is that the only thing that could actually be causing this?

first try finding out if it is indeed the connection. make a tracerout with this tool:
http://winmtr.sourceforge.net/
and post a screen shot after running it for an hour or so. do not use your own internet connection in that time, but maybe do it while players are on your server.
