Idle CPU usage?

What is considered average idle CPU usage on an empty 24 player server?

I think mine might be high.

it depends on the kernel and plugins on the server. normally with an 2.6.27 kernel you will have 2-4% of CPU Usage (1000FPS Server).

You cant say "empty 24 player server". You will get tha same results with an 2 slots server if the kernel and plugins are the same.

and it depends on how you measure it. cpu usage is not a good quantity to judge a game server system...

This is true its never good to compare cpu usage of your server to another one too many factors to consider. But if you wish to know what the difference is from one like you describe I have one on a 2.4ghz quad with all the major mods...(meta..source..mani..dm) running around 2% at idle.

even on the same system you can get 4 different results with 4 different programs showing the cpu usage... ;-)

Well using top to analyze my CPU stats, on my P4 2.8Ghz system the game server idle usage fluctuates between 10% and 45% usage. However on my AMD Opteron system, the game server idles at 4% steady. Hyperthreading is enabled on the P4 system, could this be causing this fluctuation and weirdly high CPU usage?

The opteron is 2 x dual core. I am the same mimic as on the OGP forums.

Ok, i knew i saw your name somewhere , the percentages are off because they are based off of the whole processor, so if you double the opteron percentage that should be the same as the p4 as long as they have the same clock speed.

hyperthreading makes the cpu appear as 2. but they are not 2 independed cpus, depending on what you run the other "core" get more or less load from the first one. this could make things strange...

in top you can press the key "1" to see each individual processor / core.
