SRCDS Steam group


How many slots will this hold?

Hey, well I need information on how many slots will my server run, until it has too much (starts to lag, overload, crash...). You'll probably all be jealous of this server Toungue So here is the configuration:

2U System with 6x HotSwap bays, 510W EPS Powersupply, Lowprofile
Intel Xeon L5420, 4 Core at 2,50 Ghz, 2x 6MB L2 Cache, FSB1333
Tyan Tempest i5100W Mainboard, S5376, 2x GB Lan, VGA
12 GB DDR2 PC667 DDR2-Ram registered ECC, Kingston
Western Digital 500GB SATA2 HDD RE3 24/7, 16MB Cache, 7200RPM

So, how many CS:S 100TickRate slots will this hold?

I would say 40 - 50 slots @ 100 tick per core. 12GB ram is not needed, with that processor 4GB would be plenty.

You can prolly fit 3-4 quality servers per core (12-16 total) you will run out of CPU way before you run out of ram.

Windows: Ok.. It crashed... Now what? Give up?

I would not go above 2 servers per core, if you want a high quality. for very high quality run only one server per core. and do *not* bind them to a specific core! the number of slots is not so important... (of course you might want to optimize your kernel to get stable fps)

Sorry to Hijack this thread but how do you assign a server per core? I wasn't able to find any tutorials for this.

this is generally not a good idea, as you give the linux scheduler less possibilities. srcds cannot use more than one core, so in theory you cannot improve anything, you can only make things worse. usually i've not seen much difference, but never an improvement...

First, thanks to all of you that replied. However, I have to take my word here. I just set up a server - 100TickRate, 16 slots, 333FPS (normal), and stats look like this:

AS YOU CAN SEE, THE STATS ABOVE APPLY WHEN THERE ARE 6 PPL ON THE SERVER.

First of all, I love the server FPS, aswell as the CPU usage. You guys are saying 2-4 quality servers per core (which is in total 12-16). How many slots per server did you actually mean? Regarding the CPU usage above, I would say this CPU is capable of running more slots than you said?

why don't you just try it? if you want exact numbers, they depend on so many factors... nobody can tell you how much your machine exactly can take.

The less SMP threading interrupts you squeeze out of the kernel the better, from what I understand. Taskset has done great for me!
