How do you support your server? $
#1
Basically, I am asking how do you achieve the funds for providing your server. Right now I pay $30 out of my own pocket for a "Virtual Dedicated Server" over at GoDaddy to run my DoD:S server. And no it doesn't suck and yes it is extremely popular

Not as much this week as I redid a lot of things and it was down, any who.

How do you have funds for your server? Just out of pocket?

I seen some servers sell admin for $ (I just cannot see myself doing that), sell reserve slots (to many slots on my server for 'over filling' to be a problem)

Just courteous donations (Never received one in my year of running a server)

I haven't seen outside much of that though, so I am thinking of ideas. I want to upgrade from my VDS to a server will a little more behind it and the ability to run multiple games. Cost about 3K to prepay for 2 years for a Core2Duo 2.13 Ghz processor, 2gb RAM, and CentOs5, 120 GB HDD.

I have a clan backing it, however they do not send donations. Instead the members open competition servers against mine, even though I end up being the one to install everything for them .

I have a site running off of my game server, but it barely receives traffic. I started trying to 'map making blog' as a map team by the name of "Rusmar" (hence my server name) has taken up to help with the site. Mainly to display ads to get in some money.

I think I seen a thread on here where someone uses a "Advertisements" addon and have companies pay him to have their ad there, Wonder if I could try that. Anyone else have any ideas? Right now I run my server out of good will and that I learn a lot about 'linux' from it.

It's simple: for people to get admin, they must donate once every 2 months or so. Or, just recruit members over 18, those who have jobs and a little cash they want to give Smile

I don't? Toungue Frankly, I don't know how. I have a dedicated box in Dallas and I have managed to keep it up by myself, with one other person. Its expensive. Now that I am alone its a lot harder. Basically, donations... I also rent out some servers when I can to off set the cost a bit.

Well, 5 out of 6 leaders live within 10 mins of each other (including me) and we all chip in, the amount each will depend on how much we have from donations that month.

Works well.

I don't think anyone should make a profit, unless you are running a business...

Its not so much as a business as it is a comunity

Well I don't make that big of a profit on it, enough to help pay the internet bill

but I take all the money from admin and put it into server expandment
-More ram, new os, cpu. the dedicated line. things to help the server and keep it alive

Some idea's are to sell admin/reserved slots, get donations, get clan members to pitch in, etc. If you have a nice server, no lag, great/friendly environment, fps stable server, etc you will start getting courtesy donations.

That is what I want to do with the money is look into future expansion and allowing my favorite map have its own 24/7 server.

Well, My current server is supported by 3 people in my clan (myself included, me being the head) all chipping in. However we are going to get a better server by sharing it with another clan whos only real demand is that I give them a 24 slot TF2 server and a forum.

Although im trying to drum up interest that I can get a quad dedi server also to run a game server company. I know people willing to pay and as soon as i have enough interest that it would come somewhere near breaking even i will take the plunge. Ive got alot of cash from the recent sale of my PS3 but equally i don't want to just piss it all away.

Get your clan members to pay you to install their servers

Make sure you advertise needing donations. Just get to know regulars and ask them once in a while for donations and provide excellent servers Smile.
