CS:S server rates settings
#16
I can't help you if you don't understand/believe it. But it is the case. Don't conclude from your all-the-time fast connection to all others. In Germany some people that live outside big cities have connections like 256kbit/s, if they are lucky.

Again: Do whatever you like, but beware that all settings you change from valve default have the potential to make things worse at least for some people. Keep in mind, not all connections/client-PC etc. are equal. What is good for you might not be for others. Valve is not stupid, they pretty much know what they are doing, and for sure they know it much better then everyone in these forums.

Hey, I understand and believe you! Smile I just have another priorities. I want equal settings for everybody which are as high as possible. Actually I use two connection. One in the city is 20/1 Mbit/s LAN, second is 1/0.256 Mbit/s ADSL in some God's forgotten place outside the city and there is only difference in a bit higher ping (but stable). Should work same good even on 256 kbit/s connection, this is a small server.

But don't you agree with this what I wrote before?
Quote:If I will allow standard rates which are low, then 90% of players will use this because they don't know how to change it. And if they know they change it to high anyway.
You can also find on Steam forums that one of Valve/HPE employees says that they only decided to keep old rates because some players from Russia may not handle full rates. That's not my target Smile .

I would just set the min cmd / updaterate to 66, the min rate to 20,000 and the max rate to 40,000

I never bothered touching the interp settings... Never felt it was required as the engine will automatically modify them based on a users latency.
Looking for a game server? Visit fullfrag.com and pick one up as low as $2.50 / mo!

From this what I know, the engine don't change anything, default is 100 ms.

I don't think 90% is actually true, depending probably on how you count. Usually people who play often also know more about the game and therefore use optimized settings. So at a given time probably much more than only 10% of the players on the server have higher rate settings.

Still I don't believe that forcing everyone into high rates is a good idea. People playing with lower rates feel a more imprecise game play first. You can still hit them normally, especially since the orange box update a cmdrate of 33 isn't really an issue for the other players (actually I think 99% of the players don't notice the difference!).

Much worse is the problem of people having even lower cmdrates, e.g. due to low fps. Then you can force them into a high cl_cmdrate, but that doesn't have any effect (the actual cmd rate cannot be higher than the client fps of course). So basically, forcing high cmdrates targets the wrong people. You will want to shut out lagging people with very low actual cmdrates (i.e. way below 33), but you cannot do this that way.

Err... I have people in my clan that live in Germany and sometimes (probably when their neighbors do some donwloads or so) cannot play with 66/66. Reducing to 50/50 usually does the trick. I agree that the default rates should be 66/66, but lower rates should still be allowed. I guess, that's what this statement from valve was about...

I mean, look at the big leagues. No league I know of forbids rates like 33/33. Actually server settings with minimum rates of 66/66 are usually forbidden. This has a reason...

Nope. The discussion was about sv_competitive_minspec and they didn't decide to put higher rates there. They said it was because players form some countries may not be able to handle them. I'm not sure if they mentioned Russia (I don't have anything against Russia btw) but it was definitely not about neighbours downloading stuff.

Could you please give me some links about it? I'm not so interested about any leagues, so I've never saw it Smile .
