how well would this configuration perform? Just for public servers... L4D/L4D2/CS:S etc. 66 tick.

Dual Xeon (SL8TK) 2.8 ghz
4 GB DDR
motherboard : Tyan S2735-8M

thank you!

Probably a good 32 slots per core, 66tick. Maybe 2 L4D servers per core.

Those CPUs are based off P4s. I have a server with very simpler specs to that and I can run about 1-2 CSS\TF2 servers per core but don't go anywhere near Gmod you won't be able to a server with more than 10 slots per core.

With current gen hardware yes but those CPUs are about 4-5 years old you might be able run 20 slots per core.

Thanks for the responses guys. So we're lookin at about only 4 servers max?
How would it compare to dual amd opteron 270's @ 2.0 ghz?

Yes maybe 4-5 servers, but you really won't know till you try. As for the Opterons they are quite old about the same as the Xeons

4GB of DDR1 ECC ram will probably sell for that amount, so yes it was a good deal.

but not w.r.t the performance... that server might be suitable for a web server but not for game servers.

Thanks MIG.
I plan on running the server from my home... 5mbit upload line. So even if i can run a few servers i'm fine with that. I'm more into Halo PC... did some research and people got around 8 16 man servers with about 65% CPU usage on 1 GB of RAM. Hopefully everything works out.

Probably one server, but won't run good.

This server has a very similar CPU to those ones, It can run a 10 slot tf2 server a 10 CSS server on it at 512fps fine the only thing it can’t do is have more than 11 players in Gmod

Haha sweet. I installed w2003 and saw that it was 2 xeons 2.8 with 2 cores each. So im guessing im gunna be able to host 4-8 servers?
i thought it was just gunna be 1 xeon with 2 cores.... maybe im just retarded
