nano is a nice text-based editor that also runs over ssh connections without problems. but your problem looks like you have saved the file in dos/windows instead of linux format. use dos2unix to fix that, like Arjen already recommended... (nano will not change the format, so you cannot fix it that way)

I am always glad if I remember how to exit vi without using the kill command :-D Seriously I wouldn't recommend a beginner the vi. nano/pico or emacs are much easier to use.
