Could you tell me what should I do first to optimize my dedicate machine to hosting a game servers?

This is not for beginners, that is all I have to say. Also if you are doing this for the first time ever, do it on a computer that you have physical access to. This is not for beginners who want to optimize linux dedicated machines because in most cases it will result in a server not booting and a forced reinstall.

You're right about the server not booting. That happens when you make a mistake (Kernel panic). But reinstall? Just load the previous kernel (with grub or so).

for a start you can also try UbuntuStudio. I did not try it personally but it is optimized for low latency already.

I try this first on my virtual machine.Is Kernel 2.6.26.8-rt16 the best for CSS??

or go with 2.6.32 with ck2 patch

I think yes though I am no longer sure anymore. You cannot run that kernel on all hardware and my server doesn't run it anymore. So I cannot compare. In my howto I (and other contributors) listed other kernels below that are worth trying. Switching between those kernels is not a big deal once you got one of them running.
