Hey Guys,

So I was trying to compile a custom kernel based off this tutorial: http://wiki.fragaholics.de/index.php/EN:Linux_Kernel_Optimization

A big problem for me is that I use ConfigServer Firewall to manage protection against people trying to take down my servers. Problem is, when I am compiling I always have issues where I don't select all the right netfilter options to compile into the build and it ends up causing CSF not to work. Is there any type of tutorial or rule of thumb to enabling the right modules for iptables to work correctly?

Would help me out a lot when compiling the new kernel so I can avoid those issues. I don't want to start enabling and disabling things I have no idea what they do you know?

Thanks for your help!

enabling them all as module "[M]" should do no harm. the firewall should only load the modules it needs.

Yea, I tried that, the kernel panicked and never rebooted. I don't know why, but I followed your tutorial to the T and it never works for me on CentOS. Don't know man.

probably a completely different problem? there is no following to the T, as there are many part's which can't be copy+pasted :-)

can you give us the exact kernel panic message? maybe a screen shot or so (e.g. with a digital camera)?

I don't mean that I copied and pasted areas, I mean the configuration changes I made all the necessary adjustments, then I made all the netfilter options M so they would load like you suggested. I did the RPM, and all that. I rebooted after I double checked and nothing, it ALWAYS panics.

without the exact panic message and maybe a few lines of the kernel output before the panic nobody can help you...

It's a dedicated box somewhere else, can't get any of that for you. I gave up on it. This tutorial I suppose is not for every linux setup.
